The Asian American Studies Institute (AASI) and the Asian American
Cultural Center (AsACC) at the University of Connecticut have begun
planning a national Filipino conference to be held September 20 -22,
2002 on the Storrs campus. During the last thirty years in the United
States, the Filipino American community grew from a miniscule community
to one of the fastest growing groups in the country. While the number of
U.S. born Filipinos will reach one million over the next twenty years,
it is also anticipated that an additional one million Filipinos will
enter this country during the same time. It seems only fitting that a
conference focusing on the evolving and changing Filipino American
community be held at this time. The theme "(Re) Presenting Filipino
Americans" will explore issues of Filipino culture, histories, and
politics through a variety of presentations, panels, round table
discussions, performance, and visual works. Although the conference is
academic in nature, community voices and experiences will also be woven
throughout the conference. It is our hope that you will partake in this
exciting exchange.
