The following message from J. David Edwards at JNCL-NCLIS....

We are in immediate danger of losing one of the profession's greatest
resources. The U.S. Department of Education has announced plans to
administratively change the Education Resources Information Center (ERIC).
This radical revision of ERIC would eliminate all of the ERIC clearinghouses,
including the ERIC Clearinghouse on Languages & Linguistics. Most of you
are aware of what an exceptionally valuable research & information resource
this is for our field.

For those that are interested in an action alert RE: the proposed revisions,
e-mail Scott.McGinnis at monterey.army.mil (I can't send attachments to the
list). The deadline for submitting public comment is 9 May. You are urged
to write your Members of Congress and the Secretary of Education urging them
NOT to eliminate the ERIC clearinghouses. A sample letter can be found
at the JNCL-NCLIS website of www.languagepolicy.org.

Best,
sm
