Please help us spread the word out about LING 181 – Introductory Linguistics for Language Revitalization. This course is part of the Certificate Program in Aboriginal Language Revitalization, but is open to students in all faculties.

Introductory Linguistics for Language Revitalization 
(LING 181, 1.5 units) 

This course provides an introduction to topics in the study of language and linguistics, as a foundation for understanding language revitalization. Topics include: sound systems and how they relate to orthographies, word structures and dictionaries, sentence structures and understanding texts, meaning and vocabulary, language acquisition and historical change. Develop your awareness of languages targeted for revitalization, linguistic topics and resources. 

Instructor:         
Janet Leonard is a PhD candidate in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Victoria. Janet holds a Master of Arts degree from UVIC. In her MA, she focused on the sound patterns and word structure of the local Coast Salish language, SENĆOŦEN. Her linguistic interests also extend to other North American languages. 

Having worked with Saanich community members for her thesis work, Janet has become increasingly interested and aware of revitalization efforts within the Saanich community. The object of her work is to contribute to and support the community’s revitalization efforts. 

Janet has worked as a teaching assistant within the Department of Linguistics for the past three years and has assisted with introductory and advanced level linguistic courses in the areas of phonology and morphology.

Dates:                 Thursdays, 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. 
                       January - April 2008 

Fees:                   CDN $449.10; credits students should anticipate additional UVic student fees
