The UCLA National Heritage Language Resource Center sponsors an annual research institute, established to support the Center's principal mission of developing the research base for heritage language education. Our 2012 institute will be co-sponsored by the NSEP National Language Flagship Program<http://www.thelanguageflagship.org/> as part of their Flagship Results 2012 initiative.

The Center invites applicants to participate in this program, the Sixth Heritage Language Research Institute, From Overhearers to High Proficiency Speakers: Advancing Heritage Learners' Skills. Directed by Professor Maria Polinsky (Harvard), the institute will take place from June 18-22, 2012, at UCLA. Further details can be viewed at http://nhlrc.ucla.edu/events/institute/2012/ and the application page found at http://apply.international.ucla.edu/Public/ViewForm.aspx?appID=321. Applications are due by March 1, 2012.

The Sixth Institute will focus on current linguistic research and its implications for heritage language instruction, especially with regard to higher levels of proficiency. Presenters, including several from Language Flagship programs from around the U.S., will speak about advanced heritage speakers' language skills as well as pedagogical approaches that help heritage speakers acquire high levels of language mastery.

Applications are invited from linguists, language instructors, and researchers, including doctoral students and post-doctoral fellows, currently involved in heritage language teaching and research. Limited funding will be available for graduate students and post-doctoral fellows only.

Please share this information with your faculty and graduate students. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions (chik at international.ucla.edu<mailto:chik at international.ucla.edu>).

Sincerely,
