The Hmong, Lao, Khmer Heritage Language Project at the Southeast Asian Studies Summer Institute (SEASSI) provides classes for community college and university students, teachers, and other professionals who want to learn to read and write Hmong, Lao or Khmer. These intensive classes meet this summer for five days a week for four hours a day for nine weeks at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. These classes are for people who are already speakers of Hmong or Lao or Khmer. Participants in the classes with earn six credits of university course work in Hmong or Lao or Khmer at the second-year level.* Financial Aid Those who wish to study may apply for the Hmong, Lao and Khmer Language Student Awards. With initial support from the Henry Luce Foundation, SEASSI at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has committed funding for five awards of full SEASSI tuition ($2,000) plus a living stipend ($1200). The aim of these fellowships is to promote the study of Hmong, Lao and Khmer languages by students of Hmong, Lao and Cambodian heritage. The deadline for these fellowship applications is March 1, 2001. Due to the limited funds available, all eligible applicants are strongly encouraged to apply for tuition fellowships as well.
