This is the fourth summer school organised by the Historical Sociolinguistics Network (HISON) and it
will offer classes by leading experts on modern and historical sociolinguists.
This year we will be in the fine city of Brugge / Bruges - whose city centre is a UNESCO world heritage
site.
Our teachers this year will be:
Ana Deumert (University of Cape Town)
Historical Sociolinguistics in A Colonial World, African Perspectives
Martin Durrell (University of Manchester)
Linguistic standardisation and the nation in Europe
Susan Fitzmaurice (University of Sheffield)
The uses of Social Networks Analysis for social description in Historical Sociolinguistics
Anthony Lodge (University of St Andrews)
Aspects of the sociolinguistic history of Paris
Terttu Nevalainen (University of Helsinki)
Historical sociolinguistics as corpus linguistics
Wim Vandenbussche (Vrije Universiteit Brussel)
Back to the sources . Hands-on research, problems and mysteries in archives for young researchers.
Hans Van de Velde (Universiteit Utrecht)
When apparent becomes real. The interplay of synchronic and diachronic phonological variation in
Dutch.
There will be six hours of classes per day, so there is plenty of time to explore the city. You will have
the opportunity to present your own research at a special session and there will be an excursion for the
historically-touristically minded.
The school will last for one week and the cost of 350 Euros includes accommodation, tuition, and an
excursion. If you register and pay in full before May 1st, 2010, we will give you a discount of 50 Euros,
i.e. you will only pay 300 Euros.
Please note that there are only 40 places available.
Registration is now open at <a href="http://www.bris.ac.uk/german/hison/summerschool2010">www.bris.ac.uk/german/hison/summerschool2010</a>
