The newest edition of the UCLA FAIES Indo-European Newsletter (Volume 7,
Number 1, September/October 1997) has just appeared. It contains news,
listings of new books and journals, upcoming conferences, IE books
available for review in Word and Language, as well as essays.
 
Among the short reports in this issue are:
-- highlights of the ninth annual Indo-European Conference at UCLA by
Martin Huld
-- a summary of selected papers from the third Germanic Linguistics Annual
Conference (UCLA, April 25-27, 1997) by Fred Schwink
-- a summary of the thirteenth International Conference on Historical
Linguistics (Duesseldorf, Germany, August 10-17, 1997) by Bridget Drinka
-- a brief review of the recently published Register zur Zeitschrift fuer
Vergleichende Sprachforschung: Band 1 - 100 (1851-1987).
 
The essays in this issue include:
-- "The Archaic Latin 'Garigliano Bowl' Inscription: A preliminary report"
by Brent Vine
-- "Recent Work in Vedic Studies" by Stephanie Jamison
-- "Do Genes and Languages Always Move Together? A Geneticist's View of
Indo-European Expansions" by R. Spencer Wells.
 
The newsletter is officially affiliated with the Indo-European Studies
program at UCLA.  Contribution levels (which pay for this bi-annual
newsletter and support IE activities) are $10 for students, $20 for others
($25 for those outside the continental U.S.).  Single issues may be
purchased for $5.  Checks should be made payable to "FAIES/UCLA
Foundation" and sent to: FAIES, 2143 Kelton Ave., Los Angeles, CA  90025.
Credit card purchases are also accepted.
