Sasha Vovin is entirely right that there is no
connection whatever between the different views
on the phonetic values of the two Proto-Turkic
phonemes at issues AND the different views
on the Altaic theory.  Leading opponents (e.g.,
THE leading anti-Altaicist, Doerfer) as
well as proponents of Altaic (like Sasha
or in my own small way, me) agree on this
point, though there are some people who have
not seen the light.
