Warren N. Cordell Research Fellowship Program

Purpose: The Warren N. Cordell Fellowships are awarded annually for scholarly research in lexicography, lexicology, the history of English and other languages, or related historical research in the holdings of the Cordell Collection of Dictionaries, which contains more than 12,000 word and related titles from the beginning of printing through the twentieth century. One or more awards, currently designated in the amount of $100 per day (based on a five-day week) up to a total of $1,100, will be made to one or more fellows after completion of research in the collection.

Eligibility: Individuals encouraged to apply include the following:

v Researchers with a record of publication in the areas supported by the collection;
v Recent postgraduates in applied linguistics, lexicography, and similar fields who have completed a thesis or dissertation and would like to continue their research in the holdings;
v Historiographers, historians, and researchers in subject fields who need to consult lexicological, encyclopedic, and similar source material;
v Graduate students in various fields whose use of the materials will facilitate completion of a thesis, dissertation or other publication.

Reporting: Any subsequent publication resulting from the research should be provided gratis to the Cordell Collection. The Cordell Collection should be acknowledged as the source of research materials and the Fellowships Program as a source of funding.

Speeches and other activities should be reported so that a history of the results of the research fellowships can be maintained. The Department of Rare Books and Special Collections, Cunningham Memorial Library will be happy to archive anything that a recipient provides, e.g., unpublished speeches and typescripts.

Application Process: A proposal indicating the proposed length of study up to two weeks (10 days) [will increase later] should accompany a letter of inquiry and a selected vita. These documents should be received by the Curator of the Cordell Collection no later than February 15 of each year. [The date has been extended this year.] The proposal should include not only a description of the research project proposed to be undertaken but an indication of the materials or range of materials that will be consulted. Up-to-date listings of the contents of the Cordell Collection are available on the Internet at http://cml.indstate.edu/rare/rare2.html#Cordell. Those without Internet access may wish to consult David Vancil's 1993 Catalog of Dictionaries: Word Books, and Philological Texts, 1440-1900, available in numerous research libraries, to establish whether the holdings will support the proposed research.

Send the proposal to: Dr. David E. Vancil, Curator
        Cordell Collection of Dictionaries
        Cunningham Memorial Library
        Indiana State University
        Terre Haute, IN 47809

Questions: Call 812/237-2610 or email David Vancil <libvanc at cml.indstate.edu> for additional information.

Selection: A selection committee comprised of the Curator of the Cordell Collection of Dictionaries and one or more members of the Linguistics Committee in the English Department will make a determination of the individual or individuals to receive research awards. The committee may contact finalists for additional information before making their determination or consult experts in other fields.* All applicants will be notified by April 15 of their status.

Location and Amenities: Indiana State University, located in Terre Haute, is a downtown campus located off Highway 41, or Third Street. It is located approximately four hours south of Chicago, three hours east of St. Louis, and a little more than an hour west of Indianapolis on Interstate Highway 70. Terre Haute is a relatively small city with the usual amenities. Most of the newer motels are located off Interstate Highway 70, so a rental or personal vehicle may be needed. The university library, which houses the Cordell Collection on the third floor in the Department of Rare Books and Special Collections, is located on the north end of campus, facing Seventh Street. Free campus parking will be arranged for visiting fellows. The Hulman Memorial Student Union, located near the library, contains several restaurants or other eateries that are open for noon and evening meals. Other restaurants are plentiful in the community.

*The Cordell Collection, which contains more than 130 early encyclopedias as well as numerous word books in various disciplines, has provided historical research material in many fields not directly related to linguistics, lexicology, or lexicography, e.g., accounting, the military, literature, and music. Consulting the "Subject Guide" to Vancil's Catalog of Dictionaries may suggest areas of possible research. The staff of the Cordell Collection does on-demand searches, so for additional information about subject coverage, please call or email the collection curator.
