This is the central issue explored in this volume, which contains a unique selection of innovative in-depth empirical studies written in a broadly functional framework. The factors investigated include the following: phonological influences (such as the principle of rhythmic alternation and optimal syllable structure), frequency, pervasive semantic and pragmatic aspects (including iconicity, markedness, gram-maticalization and typological tendencies), information structure, processing complexity and horror aequi (the avoidance of identity effects). Besides, the analysis of the populistic and racist ramifications of the far right discourse in Europe, extended to various forms of "set language", falls into the searcher1s domain. The "fascist" perils involve the searcher in the ethical field too. This ethical question comes from shared conviction : the necessity to think and act with those who suffer in their daily demand of humanity and act accordingly for the defence of their rights. The history of Humanities in general and of Language Sciences in particular, shows that this demand has not always been shown consideration nevertheless, which often had disastrous consequences for the disciplines in question. Moreover, today1s utmost territorialization of academic knowledge, the war between clans within scientific research institutions which, however, proclaim their attachment to democracy, show sign of a more subtle and underhand totalitarian peril that we will momentarily call "inner fascisms". The last point is the searcher1s responsibility namely his taking seriously the resources of the event which show man's ability to achieve a project and to point to an evolution far beyond the borders of his/her native country. Several analysts have thus underlined that the fascist voice makes itself heard where a voice has been missing, the voice of a thought on the future of democracy. Can the searcher have his voice heard here to defend the existence of a multilingual and citizen-oriented society at the dawn of an internationalisation generated by a new language of peace ? II, the ban of research on the origin of language and on the creation of a universal language, the very theme of the origin of language comes again to the fore as a major topic of scientific research. Reasons for this upsurge of an old theme are many. They can be sought in the current state of the art in neurosciences, cognitive sciences, anthropology, creole studies, acquisition theory etc. This issue, taking stock of the fact that the ontogenesis and the phylogenesis of language are still matters of controversy for linguistic theories and linguists, endeavours to discuss the three following themes : - primitive forms of language, linguistic evolution, grammaticalization : from protolanguages to modern languages, - the relations between hominization, neural and cognitive evolutions, and the development of the language instinct, - research on the origin of language and languages as a philosophical and epistemological issue. Calvet & P. Mathieu, University of Provence, France) ********************************** Presentation, issue n° 6 : ____________ Papers submitted could deal with one or more of the following themes : - Isn't slang an « artefact » of dictionaries ? In other words, would it not be better to consider slang (jargon, argotS), or rather slangs (jargons, argots), as linguistic variants, which are more or less marginal or in the process of integration to the language ? In that perspective, it should be possible to define possible and impossible zones of variation, domains in which innovation (coming not only from slang) would be probable and well received, and others where it would be less probable. How would one then envision the difference between slang, 'français populaire', lower-class vernaculars and social dialects ? Contributions are also invited on the epistemological underpinnings of slang dictionnarie. - should we accept the common linguistic lore which considers slang to be exclusively a lexical phenomenon ? Such an opinion seems to be contradicted, in French at least, by recent syntactical innovations such as the intransitive use of transitive verbs ? And how are we to describe pitch, accent and other phonetic features in the domain of slang ? - This forthcoming issue is also open to papers describing languages other than French. A comparative aproach will place into perspective the two themes sketched above : slang, argot, jargon as variants of a variable language, and the linguistic levels primarily affected by slang etc. The articles relating to the set of themes of this issue of Marges Linguistiques may be sent directly to the journal : contributions.ML at wanadoo.fr Details of themes and time schedule can be obtained at http://www.marges-linguistiques.com ********************************** - Numéro 7 (Mai 2004) Langue, langage, inconscient ‹ Linguistique et Psychanalyse (Sous la direction de Michel Arrivé, Univervité de Paris X, Nanterre, France et Izabel Vilela de l'Université Fédérale de Goias, Brésil) ********************************** Présentation N°7 : ____________ Relisez Freud : à tout instant vous constaterez que la problématique du langage et celle de l'inconscient sont indissolublement nouées. Before the concept of unconscious was explicitly established, as early as 1891 Freud, in his work Zur Auffassung der Apphasien (Contribution to the analysis of aphasia), introduces a pattern for the "language apparatus" and provides a "psychological outline of word representation" which, as opposed to "object representation", will be used - 25 years later ! - for the "identification" of the unconscious, in the famous article entitled precisely "The unconscious". This shows, among numerous examples, how impossible it is to separate language and unconscious. The Traumdeutung, the Psychopathologie des Alltagslebens and Der Witz give examples of this interrelation through all their pages. Indeed, Lacan strongly expressed this interrelation with his famous and redundant phrase "the unconscious is structured like a language". And, today, the crowd of lacanians are still working that seam. Linguists kept off for a long time. They set to work several years ago. Marges Linguistiques' issue n°7 aims at taking stock of what has been done so far as well as suggesting new research both at theoretical (or metatheoretical) and at actual experience levels. In order to make this special issue possible, one must somehow define the field of discourse analysis. Assuming a distinction between discourse linguistics and discourse analysis, discourse analysis is considered as only one of the disciplines belonging to discourse linguistics ; its specific interest is apprehending discourse as articulating texts and social places. The notion of « social place » must not be considered from a literal viewpoint : this « place » may be a position in a symbolic field (political, religious, etc.). The articles in this issue must highlight the relationship between text and context ; they will associate a reflection on concepts and methods in discourse analysis with the study of discourse genres, or of corpora defined by other criteria. They may also deal with the history or the various trends of discourse analysis. The contributions that only belong to text linguistics or, symmetrically, those that study social representations without taking into account linguistic phenomena cannot be accepted. University of Rouen and University of Rennes (France) ********************************** Presentation, issue n°9 : ____________ Devoting an issue of Marges Linguistiques to regional languages does not come from a simple announcement effect intended to admit once more the idea that taking linguistic variety into account requires a necessary inventory of speakers and languages. It certainly is important to define linguistic practices accurately but also to question the social discourse : the élite's discourse on the one hand - namely the one that is traditionally attributed to various institutions and the one that is peculiar to scientists - and, on the other hand, the discourse of social players, association officials, local communities, etc. Thus, devoting an issue to this theme comes within processes ‹ for French speakers - whose object is to question a complex situation where it is not in the least easy to allow for linguistic ideology, identity stakes both with searchers and the other militant players. Like a procustean bed where everyone justifies themselves, the field of the languages known as regional (the issue does not confine regional languages only to the languages recognized as such by the states but presents them as any linguistic system named by its speakers and endowed with a communicative and identitary function) examines the utterance of linguistic heterogeneousness and the social control which governs it. Of course, it is hardly possible to answer all the questions raised by the regional languages in one issue, but the editors wish (in the spirit of the journal) to gather papers presenting their theoretical ties clearly and relying, if need be, on a coherent and pragmatic approach while preserving, for the chosen processes, a critical distance which must be beneficial to the field in question. In this manner, they hope to contribute to the social debate and oppose the "benevolent discredit" which sometimes affects the minority languages of the French-speaking area. The general orientation of the issue is sociolinguistic but the editors accept papers that might be related to other social sciences provided that they use scientific processes. As previously said, the whole French-speaking area is concerned, and the papers may as much allow for conceptual reflection, a survey report or description, even broader questioning on the matter. The articles - whose list is still open considering the editors' expectations - may concern linguistic policy, grammaticalization, thee relation between language(s) and culture, political discourses on languages, linguistic ideology, roles and status, politics and languages, sociotoponymy. The articles relating to the set of themes of this issue of Marges Linguistiques may be sent directly to the journal : contributions.ML at wanadoo.fr Details of themes and time schedule can be obtained at http://www.marges-linguistiques.com ********************************** Bonne visite du site : http://www.marges-linguistiques.com / Enjoy the web site seeing ! Müller and Olga Fischer Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena / University of Amsterdam This volume, a sequel to Form Miming Meaning (1999) and The Motivated Sign (2001), offers a selection of papers given at the Third International Symposium on Iconicity in Language and Literature (Jena 2001). The studies collected here present a number of new departures. Special consideration is given to the way non-linguistic visual and auditory signs (such as gestures and bird sounds) are represented in language, and more specifically in ‘signed’ language, and how such signs influence semantic conceptualization. Other studies examine more closely how visual signs and representations of time and space are incorporated or reflected in literary language, in fiction as well as (experimental) poetry. A further new approach concerns intermedial iconicity, which emerges in art when its medium is changed or another medium is imitated. A more abstract, diagrammatic type of iconicity is again investigated, with reference to both language and literature: some essays focus on the device of reduplication, isomorphic tendencies in word formation and on creative iconic patterns in syntax, while others explore numerical design in Dante and geometrical patterning in Dylan Thomas. A number of theoretically-oriented papers pursue post- Peircean approaches, such as the application of reader-response theory and of systems theory to iconicity. 2003. Cloth. Euro 94.00 [D]/ sFr 150,- / approx. US$ 94.00 ISBN 3-11-017232-1 (Studia Linguistica Germanica 68) This study shows that women involved in National Socialism in the years 1924-1934 developed and shaped a recognizable discourse which communicated and reflected their position and status within the NS movement. The analysis is based on a variety of text-types produced by members of NS women's organisations, and includes official correspondence, circulars, reports, pamphlets, monographs and articles from NS women's journals. It draws upon several areas of linguistic theory, including feminist linguistics, semantics, pragmatics and discourse analysis, and the salient features iden-tified in the female discourse are placed within a sociolinguistic framework. While previous research into the language of the NS-system has largely ignored the possibility of a cohesive female discourse, the study supports the idea that this discourse was dynamic, and at times heterogeneous, whilst also displaying many self-defining and self-referential features. It is characterized by its ambiguities and apparent contra-dictions, which expresses separateness and difference, yet also solidarity with the NSDAP. The author is Lecturer in the Department of German at the University of London. >>From the Contents: 1. Introduction: existence of a linguistic Frauenwelt? 2. Morpho-semantic analysis 3. This volume is essential reading for everyone in the field of English grammar and all those interested in how functionalism can be brought to bear in illuminating language structure and use. >>From the contents: Manfred Krug Frequency as a determinant in grammatical variation and change Julia Schl|ter Phonological determinants of grammatical variation in English: Chomsky's worst possible case Thomas Wasow and Jennifer Arnold Post-verbal constituent ordering in English Stefan Th. Calvet & P. Mathieu, University of Provence, France) ********************************** Presentation, issue n? 6 : ____________ Papers submitted could deal with one or more of the following themes : - Isn't slang an ? artefact ? of dictionaries ? In other words, would it not be better to consider slang (jargon, argotS), or rather slangs (jargons, argots), as linguistic variants, which are more or less marginal or in the process of integration to the language ? In that perspective, it should be possible to define possible and impossible zones of variation, domains in which innovation (coming not only from slang) would be probable and well received, and others where it would be less probable. How would one then envision the difference between slang, 'fran?ais populaire', lower-class vernaculars and social dialects ? The articles relating to the set of themes of this issue of Marges Linguistiques may be sent directly to the journal : contributions.ML at wanadoo.fr Details of themes and time schedule can be obtained at http://www.marges-linguistiques.com ********************************** - Num?ro 7 (Mai 2004) Langue, langage, inconscient ? Lacan, certes, a donn? Linguistics and Psychoanalysis (directed by Michel Arriv?, Univervity of Paris X, Nanterre, France & Izabel Vilela, Federal University of Goias, Brazil) ********************************** Presentation, issue n?7 : ____________ Read Freud again : all the time you will notice that the problematics of language and of the unconscious are indissolubly linked. Marges Linguistiques' issue n?7 aims at taking stock of what has been done so far as well as suggesting new research both at theoretical (or metatheoretical) and at actual experience levels. The notion of ? social place ? must not be considered from a literal viewpoint : this ? place ? may be a position in a symbolic field (political, religious, etc.). University of Avignon (France), Fillol (V.) University of Noumea (Nouvelle-Cal?donie) & Bulot (T.) University of Rouen and University of Rennes (France) ********************************** Presentation, issue n?9 : ____________ Devoting an issue of Marges Linguistiques to regional languages does not come from a simple announcement effect intended to admit once more the idea that taking linguistic variety into account requires a necessary inventory of speakers and languages. It certainly is important to define linguistic practices accurately but also to question the social discourse : the ?lite's discourse on the one hand - namely the one that is traditionally attributed to various institutions and the one that is peculiar to scientists - and, on the other hand, the discourse of social players, association officials, local communities, etc. Thus, devoting an issue to this theme comes within processes ? for French speakers - whose object is to question a complex situation where it is not in the least easy to allow for linguistic ideology, identity stakes both with searchers and the other militant players. M?ller and Olga Fischer Friedrich-Schiller-Universit?t Jena / University of Amsterdam This volume, a sequel to Form Miming Meaning (1999) and The Motivated Sign (2001), offers a selection of papers given at the Third International Symposium on Iconicity in Language and Literature (Jena 2001). The studies collected here present a number of new departures. Special consideration is given to the way non-linguistic visual and auditory signs (such as gestures and bird sounds) are represented in language, and more specifically in ?signed? language, and how such signs influence semantic conceptualization.
