The deadline for submission of abstracts for the International Conference
<br>
on Adpositions of Movement has been extended to OCTOBER 15, 2001, with
<br>
notification of acceptance by October 31, 2001. <br>
Prospective participants who submit their abstracts by SEPTEMBER 15 (the
<br>
original deadline) will get notification of acceptance by September
30.<br>

In the past two decades, the study of adpositions (prepositions and
<br>
postpositions) has grown steadily: (i) adpositions have undoubtedly taken
<br>
up a central position in cognitive linguistic/semantic research; (ii)
<br>
semantic aspects of adpositions have received considerable attention in
<br>
language acquisition studies and in natural language processing; (iii)
<br>
adpositions have never stopped playing a role in studies that are <br>
predominantly syntactic in orientation. <br>
Early (semantic) studies largely focused on adpositions expressing
spatial <br>
relations; furthermore, there seemed to be a preference for the analysis
of <br>
adpositions' static usages. Later, research into adpositions shifted its
<br>
focus to temporal and abstract usages, and also encompassed usages <br>
expressing movement. Still, a good deal of work focused on the static
<br>
usages of prepositions (cf. the analysis of the 'basic' prepositions in,
<br>
on, and at, and their cognates); furthermore, most of this research was
<br>
synchronic in orientation and was concerned with the analysis of <br>
adpositions in a single language. Recently, linguistic studies have been
<br>
giving renewed attention to diachronic variation and change and to <br>
typological variation; both of these re-discovered areas have not only
<br>
given new momentum to the study of adpositions, but have also opened up
<br>
interesting avenues of new research in the study of other grammatical
<br>
categories expressing spatial information (affixes, case-markings, <br>
particles, directionals). <br>
The aim of this conference is to bring together new and original research
<br>
on adpositions and, more generally, on grammatical categories expressing
<br>
movement. Papers discussing typological or diachronic aspects will be
<br>
especially welcomed, but we encourage contributions from various angles
in <br>
order to be able to present as comprehensive a picture as possible on
this <br>
area of research. <br>
Below is a list of possible topics for contributions. While the focus of
<br>
this conference is on adpositions of movement, we will also consider
<br>
contributions on the other grammatical categories of movement. In the
list <br>
below, then, the term 'adpositions' should be understood as short for
<br>
'adpositions and other grammatical markers of movement'. <br>
- diachronic or typological approaches to adpositions of movement; <br>
- grammaticalization of adpositions of movement; <br>
- adpositions of movement in first and/or second language acquisition;
<br>
- syntactic aspects of adpositions of movement; <br>
- adpositions of movement in natural language processing; <br>
- the relationship between static and dynamic (or movement) usages of
<br>
adpositions: (i) are static usages cognitively more basic than dynamic
<br>
ones? (ii) do static adpositions show different grammaticalization paths
than <br>
dynamic ones ? (iii) do static usages precede dynamic ones diachronically
<br>
and/or acquisitionally ? (iv) do languages with few spatial grams have a
<br>
preference for static or dynamic adpositions? <br>
- the 'division of labor', if any, between adpositions of movement and
<br>
motion verbs? <br>
- polysemy in adpositions of movement; <br>
- cognitive linguistic approaches to adpositions of movement.<br>
Papers can be presented in English, French, or Dutch.<br>

GUIDELINES FOR THE SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS <br>

The abstract should be maximum 500 words, including a maximum of 5 <br>
references. When printed out, the title and body should fit on a single
<br>
page of 12-point type, with. 1 inch or 2.5 cm. margins. Electronic <br>
submissions (MS Word, RTF) are encouraged: <br>
(i) In the body of your email message, mention name and affiliation,
postal <br>
address, email address, the title of your paper and three keywords.
<br>
Indicate also whether you need any special equipment (such as video
<br>
projector and laptop). <br>
(ii) Send your abstract in a separate attachment, only mentioning the
title <br>
of your paper. <br>

Depuis les années 80, les recherches sur les prépositions et les <br>
postpositions, que nous appellerons dorénavant «adpositions», se sont
<br>
multipliées. Celles-ci constituent actuellement un des thèmes de
recherche <br>
majeurs en linguistique cognitive, en sémantique tout d'abord où elles
ont <br>
attiré aussi l’attention des chercheurs en acquisition du langage ou en
<br>
traitement automatique du langage naturel mais aussi en syntaxe.<br>
On constate que les chercheurs se sont d’abord intéressés à l’étude des
<br>
adpositions qui expriment des relations spatiales. Par la suite, on s’est
<br>
également penché sur les emplois temporels et abstraits. Si l’expression
du <br>
mouvement n’a pas été totalement absente des recherches, une bonne part
du <br>
travail accompli porte néanmoins sur les emplois statiques des
adpositions, <br>
le plus souvent d’un point de vue synchronique et monolingue. Le regain
<br>
d’intérêt pour les études diachroniques et typologiques a permis plus
<br>
récemment de compléter ces recherches et d’ouvrir des perspectives <br>
intéressantes pour une nouvelle étude d’autres catégories grammaticales
<br>
exprimant des données spatiales (affixes, marques casuelles,
particules,etc.).<br>
Ce colloque se veut un lieu de présentation de recherches nouvelles et
<br>
originales sur les adpositions, et, de façon plus générale, sur les
autres <br>
catégories grammaticales exprimant le mouvement. Nous voudrions favoriser
<br>
les communications sur les aspects diachroniques et typologiques de ces
<br>
expressions, mais nous accueillerons également des études sur les <br>
adpositions et marqueurs de mouvement sous d’autres perspectives, pour
que <br>
soit offerte une image aussi complète que possible du domaine de
recherche.<br>
Les communications pourront donc s'inscrire, entre autres, dans les axes
de <br>
recherche suivantsou porter sur les sujets qui suivent. (Dans la liste
qui <br>
suit, le terme d’«adpositions» doit donc être interprété comme un
générique <br>
incluant aussi les autres marqueurs de mouvement.) <br>
- des approches diachroniques ou typologiques des adpositions ; <br>
- les adpositions dans l’acquisition de la langue maternelle ou lors
<br>
de l’apprentissage d’une seconde langue; <br>
- les aspects syntaxiques des adpositions ; <br>
- les adpositionset marqueurs de mouvement dans le traitement du <br>
langage naturel; <br>
- la relation entre les emplois statiques et dynamiques des <br>
adpositions: (i) Les emplois statiques sont-ils plus fondamentaux pour la
<br>
cognition que les emplois dynamiques? (ii)La grammaticalisation des
<br>
adpositions statiques suit-elle les mêmes voies que celle des adpositions
<br>
de mouvement? (iii) Les emplois statiques précèdent-ils les emplois
<br>
dynamiques dans l’évolution du langage ou lors de son acquisition? (iv)
Les <br>
langues comportant peu de marqueurs spatiaux ont-elles une préférence
pour <br>
des adpositions statiques ou au contraire dynamiques? <br>
- Comment les adpositions de mouvement et les verbes de mouvement se
<br>
combinent-ils? <br>
- La polysémie des adpositions de mouvement.<br>
