Only daughter structures

Greetings,

when thinking about DetPhrases one wonders how determiners of type
"word" get 'promoted' into "phrase". According to Pollard & Sag 94
pp. 32 footnote 32, it seems that this might be done via the
head_complement_schema where the comp-dtrs list is empty.

Another solution (?) may be found, if I understand it correctly, in the
sample grammar HPSG in ALE where a "word promotion rule" is used.

phrase X ---> word X ARG-ST < >

The problem is that either the DTRS atribute of the mother is
uninstanciated (and *all* adj,subj,comp,fill structures seem
compatible with it) or a different type of headed structure
is required.

Are these the two possibilities to consider, both from the linguistic
and the computational points of view?

Thanks in advance,
cheers,
Victor Siegelmann
