>From the HPSG standing committee:

There will soon be a vacancy on the committee, and
suggestions are sought for new members.

The function of the committee is to ensure that a conference
focusing on HPSG-related topics is held once a year (see below).
As one means of involving more of the scholarly community,
membership in the committee is rotated to regularly bring in new people.
Since Daniele Godard will be rotating off the committee after several years
of meritorious service (Aug. 03), we must find a replacement for her.

The task of committee members is to participate in deliberations about
yearly conferences. For this we'd like someone whois reliable and
willing to chase down information when this is needed. We'd also like
to keep a balance of interests, constituencies and biographies.

The purpose of this mail is to solicit suggestions for a new member.
Nominations should be sent to the chair of the standing committee
NOT to the whole HPSG list. The chair will forward the collection of
names to the committee members for consideration.
(Thus, these suggestions are proposals, not votes. We do not propose
a public discussion of scholarly and personal qualities or even indirect
comparison, since such matters are sensitive.)

Please submit your nominations to g-green at uiuc.edu in this form:

1. Name of nominee, email address
2. Your name, email address
3. Assurance that this person would agree to serve if selected.
   * * please cc your nomination to the nominee so that (s)he knows * *
4. Any comments you care to make. Please be brief (under 50 words)

Nominations will close two weeks after this is posted.

                        HPSG Standing Committee

The primary task of the standing committee is to see that the HPSG
conference is organized at regular intervals. The standing committee
consists of seven regular members, including one student member, plus two
permanent members (i.e., nine in total). Carl Pollard and Ivan Sag are the
permanent members. Regular members serve a term of three years, which may
be extended for a second three years, but only once.

The chair is chosen from the standing committee and normally serves
two years as chair. The chair is named one year in advance (in order to
follow preparations in detail), and stays on a year in the committee after
being chair so that that experience is readily available. If necessary,
the chair's term on the committee is extended to comply with these rules.

Previous members may be renominated (after a break in service); in
particular, nothing should prevent student members from serving
as non-student members.

Present membership of the standing committee:

Chan Chung (until 08/04; first mandate)
Ann Feldman (student member, until 08/05)
Daniele Godard (previous chair, extended mandate until 08/03)
Georgia M. Green (until 08/05, chair through 08/04)
Claire Grover (until 08/04; second mandate)
Tibor Kiss (until 08/04; first mandate)
Carl Pollard (permanent member)
Ivan Sag (permanent member)
Gert Webelhuth (until 08/05; second mandate).
