CP -- here's some info

Thanks to Bob Borsley, David Pesetsky, Aaron Broadwell, & John Beavers, I
think I've tracked down the citation info I was looking for.

Bresnan 1972 (her Ph.D. dissertation) argued that verbs might
subcategorize for the C of an embedded clause.

Stowell 1981 (his Ph.D. dissertation) claimed that C was the head of S',
but doesn't seem to have taken it to the x-bar theoretic CP conclusion.

Chomsky 1986 (Barriers), proposes an x-bar theoretic CP (and IP).

If anyone knows of an earlier citation for CP (as opposed to S'), lemme
know! I wouldn't be surprised if CP was floating around a bit before it
appeared in Barriers.
