University or Organization: Nanyang Technological University
Department: Linguistics and Multilingual Studies
Job Location: Singapore

Job Rank: Post Doc

Specialty Areas: Computational Linguistics; Machine Translation

Description:

Post Doc Researcher Machine Translation

Context:

The Division of Linguistics and Multilingual Studies (LMS) at NTU
seeks a post-doctoral fellow for research on machine translation.

LMS has a focus on the study of the languages of multilingual
individuals and of multilingual societies. Research in the division is
geared towards a deepening of our understanding of multilingualism
through empirical studies of topics such as language description and
documentation, language contact, loanword phonology, machine
translation, language maintenance, and multilingual language
processing and acquisition.

One focus of this research is a detailed multilingual analysis of
structure and meaning using parallel texts in Chinese, English and
Japanese. Structural analysis primarily uses head driven phrase
structure grammars (in cooperation with the Deep Linguistic Processing
using HPSG Initiative). Semantic analysis use WordNets for all three
languages. We are currently investigating the use of these detailed
analyses to improve the quality of limited domain high accuracy
machine translation. There should be positive feedback between this
research and the cross-lingual research on meaning that is already
underway.

The postdoctoral fellow will work with Francis Bond, bond at ieee.org.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

The postdoctoral fellow would primarily be involved in the acquisition
of linguistic knowledge from aligned text -- either monolingual
constraints or cross-lingual transfer rules of various levels of
generality.

Postdoctoral fellows may be required to assist in teaching, up to the
equivalent of one semester-based course per academic year.

Requirements and Profile:

- PhD Thesis in linguistics, computational linguistics or natural
language processing. Applicants should possess a doctoral degree
issued not more than 3 years prior to the time of application.
- Knowledge of and experience with machine translation or semantic analysis
- Excellent knowledge of English, knowledge of Japanese and Chinese a plus
- Excellent communicative skills, both orally and in writing

Appointment:

The duration of the position is 2 years. Initial appointment is for a
period of one year, renewable for a second year, subject to
satisfactory performance.
