Conference Announcement: Interpreting, Translation, and Gender in Conflict-Affected Situations
Date: October 24-25, 2023
Location: Centro Polifunzionale Studenti (Palazzo Ex Poste), Aula Leogrande, Bari, Italy

The University of Bari Aldo Moro is pleased to announce the upcoming conference, "Interpreting, Translation, and Gender in Conflict-Affected Situations," which will be held in Bari, Italy, on October 24 and 25, 2023. Organized by Annarita Taronna, Rosita Maglie, and Dora Renna, scholars from the University of Bari Aldo Moro and the University of Ferrara, this event brings together an array of partners and organizations dedicated to exploring the intersection of gender, translation, and conflict.

The theme of the conference is "Interpreting, Translation, and Gender in Conflict-Affected Situations " and delves into the intricate relationship between gender, translation, and conflict, with a specific focus on such old and recent conflicts as the Israeli-Palestinian, the Ukraine war, as well as those in Afghanistan, and Syria. The conference acknowledges the differing impacts of violence on men and women, from direct combat injuries to the disproportionate suffering of women through sexual violence, displacement, and vulnerability. Building on the work of scholars like Mona Baker and others, the conference explores how translators shape the gendered aspects of conflict narration, addressing a significant gap in academic literature regarding gender issues in conflict zones.

The conference will feature two distinguished keynote speakers: Silvia Antosa from the University for Foreigners of Siena and Federico M. Federici from the University College of London.
The event will conclude with a roundtable discussion in which professionals in the field will explore the theme: "The Role of Interpreters, Translators, and Language Mediators in Conflict-Affected Situations, Anti-Violence Centers, and Community Service Organizations: Sharing Experiences, Projects, and Best Practices." Furthermore, the conference will host the launch of the photo exhibition titled "Women's gaze, women's visions," by the photographer Gabriella Ciannamea and edited by Michelina Savino.

The conference is proudly supported by the University of Bari (Department of Education, Psychology, and Communication, Undergraduate Degree Course in Communication Studies), The National PhD in Gender Studies, the Progetto RegIA Horizon Europe Seeds, UNIRE (University Network Against Gender Violence) and the AIA (Italian Association of English Studies). Additionally, the conference has forged valuable partnerships with Assointerpreti (Italian Association of Professional Conference Interpreters), Auxilium Cooperative, GEA Cooperative, Municipality of Bari (Welfare and Inclusion Council), Antiviolence Centre of the Bari Municipality, Antiviolence Centre Network Sanfra, NGO Giraffa Onlus, NGO Medihospes, ZeroDD, and Puglia Tourist Promotion Agency.

We invite scholars, practitioners, students, and advocates to join us in Bari, Italy, for this important conference. Together, we will deepen our understanding of the profound connections between gender, translation, and conflict, ultimately striving for a more just and equitable world.
