The contemporary world is in constant evolution, with phenomena such as globalisation, migration, and technological development deeply impacting on the national, social and cultural fabric. In this context, translation emerges in all its significant relevance:
it serves as a 'bridge' for intercultural understanding.

Organised by the Committee for Translation Studies of the Language Center of the University of Naples Federico II (CLA), the "Translation Study Day" will take place on October 27, 2023, at the Accademia Pontaniana in Naples, starting at 9:00 a.m. (CET). The
title of the event, "Behind and Beyond Translation: Methods, Discourses, Practices" highlights the crucial role of translation in a world where physical and virtual mobility accelerates the flow of people, ideas and goods, creating an increasingly multi-ethnic
and multicultural society.

Translation is not merely a process of transposition between languages; it is a cultural migration wherein languages continue to represent and convey the differences underlying their source societies and cultures. 'Translating' means engaging in intercultural
dialogue, where one learns to listen, collaborate and harmonise diverse perspectives within the realm of language.

The event will open with words of welcome from Matteo Lorito, Rector of the University of Naples Federico II, Andrea Mazzucchi, Head of the Department of Humanities, Giancarmine Bongo, Coordinator of the MA’s Degree Course in Languages and Literatures for European
Plurilingualism, and Flavia Gherardi, Coordinator of the BA's Degree Course in Modern Languages.

«The Translation Studies Day – explains Flavia Cavaliere, Professor of English Language and Translation and member of the Committee, invites us to engage in a dialogue about translation as a means of intercultural understanding in a globalised world. As Gadamer
observes – Professor Cavaliere continues – every interpersonal encounter and textual interpretation depend on a dialogue in which participants are willing to overcome cultural barriers to embrace a “fusion of horizons”».

Throughout the day, there will be talks by scholars focusing on a wide range of topics, including the 'estranging' approach of today's translation process, the role of the translator in the twenty-first century, the contribution of technology and the translation
of specialised languages. These presentations will highlight how, from various perspectives, translation can promote the acceptance and integration of 'the Other,' as advocated by the motto of the European Union, which invites us to be "united in diversity".
