Required/Preferred Qualifications

The Department of American Studies in the College of Liberal Arts at  
the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, invites applications for a  
full-time faculty position for academic year 2008/09. Appointment  
will be as a visiting, temporary, or contract assistant professor, or  
as a lecturer or teaching specialist, depending on qualifications and  
experience to teach advanced level courses in the Dakota Language.

This position will be dedicated to the Dakota Language Revitalization  
Program supported by an appropriation from the State of Minnesota.

This appointment begins August 25, 2008 and concludes May 24, 2009.  
Renewal of this appointment may be possible for second year, 2009/10.

Required qualifications: Bachelor's degree or equivalent academic  
training (four or more years) in American Indian Studies or related  
field, or equivalent cultural or experiential background; evidence or  
promise of scholarly or creative achievement; two years of college or  
university teaching experience.

Preferred Qualifications: Advanced degree in American Indian Studies  
or related field; four years of college or university teaching  
experience.

Candidates will be assessed according to the overall quality of their  
academic, cultural or experiential background and scholarly and/or  
creative work, evidence of commitment to teaching and skills as a  
teacher, and strength of recommendations.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will be a native speaker of the Dakota  
Language and /or will be able to demonstrate a high level of fuency  
in the language and its broader cultural context.

The successful candidate will be expected to help develop new  
teachers and speakers of the Dakota language by developing and  
teaching advanced level Dakota language courses and other related  
courses, such as Dakota language curriculum design and resource  
development, teaching methodologies for Dakota language, Dakota  
language in early childhood and elementary education, indigenous  
language program development, Dakota linguistics, Dakota language  
philosophy, Dakota language research, Dakota composition, literature,  
texts, and oral traditions.

The successful candidate also will be expected to contribute to  
programmatic development efforts in the Dakota Language Program.

Program/Unit Description:
The Department of American Indian Studies has long been committed to  
the development of theories and methodologies that reflect American  
Indian perspectives and embrace ways of knowing that stand in  
contrast to the linear analytic Euro-American studies typically found  
in colleges and universities. Two tracks are available to academic  
majors, one of which is based on mastery of one of the indigenous  
languages taught by the department, usually Dakota or Ojibwe. Majors  
may choose from a wide variety of courses, covering American Indian  
literature, art, philosophies, and socio-economic issues.
