U.S. House honors Meskwaki code talkers
The Gazette
Iowa

WASHINGTON - The House voted unanimous voice approval Thursday of a resolution
honoring the Meskwakis and other American Indian tribes for their services as
code talkers in World War I and World War II.

In 2001, the Navajo code talkers — who, like members of other Indian tribes,
used their native language to foil enemy code breakers — were recognized for
their contribution, but other tribes' code talkers had not been. The Code
Talker Recognition Act passed Thursday recognizes every code talker with a
Congressional Gold Medal for his tribe and a silver medal duplicate to each
code talker, including eight Meskwakis from Tama County.
