   The Linguistics Dept here at the University of Arizona (Tucson) offers
a Master's degree in "Human Language Technology", basically computational
linguistics. There is also a good computer science department, so your
student could combine linguistics and computer science, and then go to
graduate school well prepared to "make a difference".
