ONEIDA — When art class ended for teacher Cynthia Thomas'
second-graders at the Oneida Nation Elementary School earlier this
week, students lined up based on the Oneida name for their color-coded
table.

It's one of many ways the tribe works to weave culture into the
studies at its school district, which educates about 442 students. The
elementary school has 324 students; 88 are in the high school and 30
are in preschool.

The tribe launched the school system about 30 years ago, starting with
a small elementary school. Today, the system has expanded to include a
high school.
