Wikipedia in education newsletter

Anything published on Wikipedia is under a free license and this is clearly marked on Wikipedia's regular and editing pages. Republishing in books is actually legal IF the publisher states that it was taken from Wikipedia or written by you (which I highly doubt). You, as the author, do have the right to complain to the publisher about the copy/paste if you were not attributed, but they do not need your permission ahead of time to reprint. Wikipedia is a free (in both senses of the word) resource. The newsletter, however, is more geared toward using the encyclopedia as a teaching tool.... mostly getting students involved in a meaningful way in accordance with course goals. As a professor, the benefits to me have been different than those of traditional publishing. The networking has been fantastic, I have a unique niche at my school and I have had opportunities to travel to speak about my experiences. Im speaking on 4 September at the University of Leicester as a keynote and to the state convention of museums in New Mexico in November. Its very important to be aware of what Wikipedia can and cannot do for professors and students before becoming involved. This is one of the main reasons for the Education Program and the newsletter. Im also very available for any questions! Leigh

Everyone should be aware that information that you post on Wikipedia may be republished by other parties. We have found that some individuals have taken content directly from Wikipedia
and published it and made it available on Amazon. An example of this is the Wiki about the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. This is a Wiki I contributed to in the past. If you look on Amazon there is a digital and/or print on demand publication with I believe
three different editors listed available for sale for about $40. In the short preview to the "book" the text is taken directly from Wikipedia, and some of it was written be myself. I never gave them the rights to publish this content and it seems disingenuous
to now offer it for sale, when the original content was meant to be freely and publicly available. I do not have confirmation that Wikipedia is directly involved. I offer this as if tribes place content on any Wiki websites, the same may happen. If anyone
else knows further details I would be interested in hearing more. They have done this with many entries.

thank you
