*Seasonal calendar shows bush knowledge*

By Vanessa Mills

Forget the months of the year and Spring, Summer, Winter and Autumn in the
north. Try tuning your calendar to the bush.

Most of us notice when the dragonflies are out, the boabs come into flower,
the wattles bloom, cicadas begin to screech, or the winds change. It is
part of seasonal changes we usually fix to a month of the year.

Two newly published indigenous calendars will be a great addition to your
kitchen wall next year

The Walmajarri and Gooniyandi calendars have been developed by local people
and CSIRO, through the long running Tropical rivers and Coastal Knowledge
project.

The posters are large, colourful and highly detailed about optimum times to
go hunting and fishing for certain species or to collect certain bush
plants.
