Taiwan moves to save endangered aboriginal languages

Nearly NT$10 million (US$339,000) will be devoted to a program to
revitalize aboriginal languages in Taiwan facing extinction, the Council of
Indigenous Peoples announced Feb. 15.

According to UNESCO standards, nine of the 42 languages and dialects spoken
by Taiwan’s indigenous peoples are in serious danger of disappearing, CIP
Deputy Minister Mayaw Dongi said.

“While languages are best transmitted between family generations, we hope
government support can contribute to saving more languages from dying,” he
said.
