CHASE, BC, Jan. 9 /CNW Telbec/ - On behalf of the Honourable
Beverley J.
Oda, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Status of
Women, Colin Mayes, Member of
Parliament (Okanagan-Shuswap), today
announced funding of $49,968 for the
Tellqelmucw Secwepemc Heritage
Society. The funds will help the Society create
a website to offer
young Canadians a virtual journey through the Secwepemc
territory.
"Canada's New Government is committed to our
young people and, by
providing resources for the community, this
project will promote the language
and culture of the Secwepemc
people," said Minister Oda.
"Our support will
contribute to the development of interactive online
learning
material for Secwepemc language immersion programs for students from
pre-school to grade nine," said Mr. Mayes. "The community
will have an
opportunity to contribute their traditional knowledge
and to showcase their
rich cultural and linguistic
resources."
"This project will introduce all
Canadians to the culture of the
Secwepmec people of central
British Columbia," said Robert Matthew, President
of the
Tellqelmucw Secwepemc Heritage Society. "Sharing First Nations
perspectives is critical to understanding Canada's mosaic, and this
website
will enhance the cultural identity of the Secwepemc people
in our diverse
society."
The Secwepemc Corridor
Journey will bring Internet users through the
Secwepemc territory.
At each stop along the way, they will learn about the
history,
people, stories, and language of the region. The journey will
include
information about the 17 Secwepemc bands, as well as
information on Aboriginal
language immersion programs and
resources.
The Tellqelmucw Secwepemc Heritage Society has a
mandate to cooperate
with other groups to make available materials
for the advancement, retention,
and development of the Secwepemc
(Shuswap) language and traditional practices.
The Society is
active in promoting the language and culture of the Secwepemc
people through language revitalisation initiatives.
Canada's
New Government will provide funding through the Canadian Culture
Online strategy of the Department of Canadian Heritage, which
encourages a
uniquely Canadian presence on the Internet. The
Department works with
creators, cultural industries, communities,
and institutions to produce and
make available to Canadians the
digital cultural content that will help
promote Canada's rich
culture, history, arts, and heritage.
