partnership of the University of Victoria’s Department of Linguistics and
Division of Continuing Studies and the En’owkin Centre, is pleased to be

Special Topics in Aboriginal Language Revitalization: Master Apprentice
Models for Teaching and Learning
LING 187 (1.5 units)

This course provides a foundation in the Master-Apprentice language
learning model and examines how it can be used as an effective language
revitalization tool in Aboriginal community settings. The course will also
cover other immersion models, and will review skills needed to support
language learning.
Through this course, you will
• understand the Master-Apprentice language learning model
• recognize the master's role and identify strategies to assist the
master with his/her role
• build your awareness of library and research resources to assist
in language learning
• demonstrate basic knowledge of grammatical concepts relevant to
your own language
• demonstrate knowledge of digital recording and editing for use in
the Master-Apprentice model
• develop a plan to implement the Master-Apprentice model in your
community
• identify other immersion approaches to teaching and learning in
Aboriginal communities
Instructor: Dr. Suzanne Gessner is a linguist and language researcher, and
as part of the language team at First Peoples' Heritage Language and
Culture Council she assists with community-driven First Nations language
revitalization efforts across British Columbia. Suzanne also teaches at
the University of Victoria and at UBC. Her linguistic work has focused on
Dene (Athapaskan) languages, including Navajo, Dene SuLine, and Dakelh
(Carrier). She has been very fortunate to have speakers of these languages
as teachers. Suzanne comes from a large family in Saskatchewan and is
connected to Cree language and culture through two siblings who are Cree.
Field Methods for Language Preservation and Revitalization: Documentation
and Recording

This practical course explores the planning strategies, protocols, and
methods of data collection, analysis, and organization that are
appropriate for field activities associated with language preservation and
revitalization. Through online learning and interactions, hands-on
activities, participants focus on:
• elicitation methodologies
• audio recording
• digital file management
• strategies for community involvement
• protocols
• ethical and intellectual property issues
Instructor: Dr. Strang Burton has more than 25 years of post-secondary
teaching experience, more than 15 years documenting local First Nations
languages under the direction of community-run programs, and has taught
language documentation to community groups from around Canada since 2006
for the CALR program, as well as SFU and NVIT, including work on five
online Moodle courses directed to First Nations languages.
