I must disagree with your last point here.   An ergative description of
early PIE or pre-PIE explains various oddities in PIE.   I agree that there
are no arguments (yet) that it must have been ergative, and none that it
cannot have been ergative, but in light of its explanatory potential, it
surely is at least "interesting".
