Dear IE-ists,

I wonder if you could refer me to any recent reference dealing
wih the etymologies of Gr. herme:ne'us, herme:ne'o: etc. and
Lat. inter-pres. The Greek root her- is assumed to be a loan
from a NE language in Chantraine, Frisk and Krahe, while Latin
interpres has been variously assigned to pretium, *inter-pers
=> -partes, *per- 'take over' with derivations outside Latin
etc. (rejected in Walde-Hoffmann, s.v. interpres). Any ideas or
pointers?

Thank you, best wishes, WOlfgang
