About three years ago Carol Justus gave a paper on it (or better, on
them) at the International Congress on Medieval Studies at Kalamazoo;
I seem to recall that she saw in them traces of early IE schemes of
number collection.  I don't know whether she's published any of this,
but failing a better recommendation you could try her at
