He did more than that: he enslaved some of them and shipped them back to
Spain.

And the encomenderos followed up with enslavement of entire villages, while
Nicaragua was called the Land of War in De Las Casas' time, because of the
constant slave raids visited on that country. And then there were the
enslaved silver miners at Potosi, in Peru and Mexico both... Plus a bunch
of Wampanoags and assorted other Algonquin peoples got shipped off to the
West Indies for sale to the plantations.
