Yes, the plague of Justinian does indeed seem to have been relevant. This idea goes back to Morris 1973, at least. However, Higham (1992) denies that we even know there was a plague. My view is that 1) yes, there was a plague, and 2) though it demoralized and weakened the Britons, it did not exterminate them, or come close. Dr. David L. White
