-- since the brown bear remained common in Europe down to early medieval
times (and beyond, in some regions), they would have plenty of time to make
its acquaintance.  One would think.

Incidentally, a look at the faunal assemblages found in Neolithic and later
habitation sites would help you avoid these speculation-in-a-vacuum
excursions into folk entymology.
