Abstract Parallelism of Adjective Declension in Germanic and Balto-Slavic

Germanic and Balto-Slavic adjective declension are parallel in two
somewhat unusual ways. First, in each branch there have developed extended
forms connected with definiteness. Second, in each branch adjective
declension patterns with pronominal declension, where there is a difference.
It is as if adjective declension in the two branches has for some reason
converged upon the same abstract model, which is not, as far as I know, to
be attributed to PIE. Is there a generally accepted explanation for these
facts? (Don't tell me, let me guess: it's a coincidence!)
