the 'Dhole'

I really don't have time for all this, but an interested person
might want to consult Grzemek. Dholes are not restrictd to any particular
habitat within their range. They are found in the alpine steppes of Tibet
(wolves too), for example. Wolves are found in essentially all habitats of
the northern hemisphere except deserts and tropical forests (which are not
necessarily dense). In northern Mexico they are restricted to (lightly)
forested mountains, and do not occur in the semi-arid sub-tropical lowlands.
Habitat segregation that is not characteristic of two species in general is
fairly often found where there ranges overlap, and that appears to be what
has happened in India.
