Dear fellow researchers,

I am currently counseling a project team for an ethnographically oriented
longitudinal study on child conversation in German (0 to 7 years of age).
The team members seem to be getting pretty confused about the types of
rules they are getting from their supervisors - who claim that these are
CHILDES rules, not their rules. Their biggest problem is that they are now
require to use standard lexemes in their transcription although they are
also interested in the development towards standard forms over the years.
I cannot recall any such "standard forms only" policy in the manual nor in
any of the projects I have knowledge of. Is there such a policy in some
"hidden manual" (it would seem strange to me, given the fact that this
procedure would make many analyses impossible)?

The other problem is the training of _student_ assistants for transcribing
the recordings. How much time and what type of training would be wise to
schedule for student assistants who are neither familiar with language
acquisition phenomena nor with transcribing spoken language?

I would be utterly grateful for any type of information...
