The workshop aims at bringing together researchers from different fields (phonologists, phoneticians, psycholinguists, syntacticians, semanticists) in order to create a forum for dialogue and research across disciplines. The notion of domains is recurrent across disciplines with different understandings: - phonology: vowel harmony domains, templates, etc - phonetics: articulatory cycles, intonational domains, etc - syntax: anaphora/binding domains, quantification / scope domains, locality / phases, etc - psycholinguistics: integration units in speech and language, domains of lexical access, etc The workshop will question the different conceptions of the notion of "domains" as defined within or across (sub)disciplines, and in particular, the possible interfaces between these alternative (converging or competing) conceptions. - Phonology / Syntax interface (sandhi, mutations, intonation, etc) - Phonology / Morphology / Syntax Interface (clitic domains, etc) - Syntax / Semantics Interface (mapping between syntactic and semantic domains, etc) We encourage submission of abstracts from different disciplines in linguistics: - (Experimental) Phonetics - Phonology, Morpho-Phonology - Syntax - Syntax-Semantics Interface - Acquisition - Psycholinguistics - Computational Linguistics * Invited Speakers - Cécile Fougeron (CNRS, Paris 3 University) - Heather Goad (McGill University, Montréal) - Célia Jakubowicz (CNRS, Paris 5 University) - Brenda Laca (Paris 8 University) - Éric Mathieu (University College London) - Noël Nguyen (Provence University) - Patrick Sauzet (Toulouse University) - Marilyn Vihman (Bangor University, Wales) * Scientific Comitee - Jean-Pierre Angoujard (Université de Nantes) - Joaquim Brandao de Carvalho (Université Paris 8) - Patricia Cabredo (CNRS, Université Paris 8) - Nick Clements (CNRS, Université Paris 3) - Catherine Colin (Université de Nantes) - Olivier Crouzet (Université de Nantes) - Elisabeth Delais (CNRS, Université de Toulouse) - Hamida Demirdache (Université de Nantes) - Jacques Durand (Université de Toulouse) - Cécile Fougeron (CNRS, Université Paris 3) - Larry Hyman (University of Berkeley, USA) - Célia Jakubowicz (CNRS, Université Paris 5) - Brenda Laca (Université Paris 8) - Jean Lowenstamm (Université de Paris7) - Ora Matushansky (Université Paris 8) - Amina Mettouchi (Université de Nantes) - Léa Nash (Université de Paris 8) - Noël N'Guyen (Université d'Aix en Provence) - Javi Ormaçabal (Université du Pays-Basque, Gastéiz) - Annie Rialland (CNRS, Université Paris 3) - Alain Rouveret (Université de Paris 7) - Patrick Sauzet (Université de Toulouse) - Tobias Scheer (Université de Nice) - Lisa Selkirk (Umass, USA) - Myriam Uribe-Etxabarria (Université du Pays-Basque, Gastéiz) - Jacqueline Vaissière (CNRS, Université Paris 3) - Marilyn Vihman (University of Wales) - Sophie Wauquier-Gravelines (Université de Nantes). * Organisation This workshop is organised by the AAI (Acoustics, Acquisition and Interpretation) research group (Nantes University, France). Easy to use and great sound and picture quality. check out the possibility of transferring the MiniDV format to VHS (for easy viewing). Date of material unspecified- probably more recent - Panasonic AG-DVC15p - it's mini DV- It cost about $3000 Canadian. It's bigger but good for stability and easy to operate; can record on 2 channels -Sony Digital-8 camcorders. They're very good and a bit less expensive than mini-dv.; compatible Hi8 - Panasonic NV-GS3 (mini DV), which is an excellent digital camera. It is small , good for following subjects anywhere as other digital camcorder can be connected directly to computer, for transcription with CLAN connected to video fragments From bpearson at comdis.umass.edu Fri Nov 7 16:01:39 2003 From: bpearson at comdis.umass.edu (Barbara Pearson) Date: Fri, 7 Nov 2003 11:01:39 -0500 Subject: videorecorders - info summary In-Reply-To: Message-ID: Dear Edy, I'll just add a second to your report. We bought a Sony digital 8 camcorder 2 years ago. It was less expensive and our needs are fairly limited. There have been 2 problems: the eject mechanism was taxed by our playing tapes back through the camera and it had to be fixed (by the dealer at fairly great inconvenience); and the tripod attachment is where the tape gets changed. You have to really practice to be able to dismount the camera from the tripod, change the tape, and remount it, without losing too much of the event you're taping. On the other hand, the output medium is convenient. We had a professional photographer recording at the same time onto mini-DVs. We couldn't figure out a way to even view their tapes without a huge investment, so we had them put them on VHS. I just mention them because these were things one needs to think about in advance, and no one reminded us to. JVC makes a dual deck, the HR-DVS3U, for about $1000, which can be used to playback mini-DV tapes and VHS tapes, and can convert in either direction. It also gives you the familiar jog-shuttle control for mini-DV, which is otherwise hard to get. mini-DV really does have vastly superior audio to VHS. I haven't yet explored mini-DV to PC, but hope to do so soon. It would be very helpful for me to see an example of a Tamil consent form that someone else has used, to get an idea of how to word certain things on the form. Tamil is most useful, but it would also be helpful to see a consent form in Hindi, Bengali, or Telegu. I would greatly appreciate hearing back from other researchers who have done work in India, or who could put me in touch with others who have done work there. I would also be interested in hearing about experiences researchers have had in asking participants in India to sign an informed consent form. VHS is a good option for budget projects in which low resolution (both video and audio) is no problem. Mini-DV is the best way to go if you have a bit more money and need detailed analyses (e.g., exact 1/30 sec sampling rate). We went with Canon DV cameras because they have better optics than some other manufacturers, and are not significantly more expensive. We got GL-1s for less-controlled environments (e.g., naturalistic observational data), because they have excellent low-light performance, excellent optics (3 CCL) and very good digital image processing. The GL-1 is no longer produced (you might luck into finding a refurbished unit at a Web-based discounter), but the new GL-2 looks comparable (on the Canon website). I found it for about $1700 in a quick web search, but a bit more searching & bargaining might shave 100-200 off of that. Note, however, that the GL line is considered "pro-sumer"--i.e., almost professional-quality. For a less-expensive option, the Optura line has pretty good optics and are small & easy to use. We have 2 Optura 20s and have had no problems so far. Video quality seems good, though I'm no expert. In both cases, a decent range of mics are available from various manufacturers and vendors, if the built-in mic is inadequate for your purposes. One note: 60 min mini-DV tapes usually cost $6-7 each retail. This is really outrageous, and a burden for research projects with limited budgets. I've been buying from certain merchants on-line using eBay and PayPal (for secure transactions) and paying about $3.50 per tape in bulk. Still pricier than VHS, but no comparison in quality, flexibility, etc. Issues of storing & backing up digital video, and processing & coding in different platforms, are more significant than which camera to buy. If anyone has questions about these issues, feel free to contact me directly (though we are still ironing out some procedures, so no guarantees I'll be able to answer anything!). > Dear Edy, > > I'll just add a second to your report. > > We bought a Sony digital 8 camcorder 2 years ago. > It was less expensive and our needs are fairly limited. > There have been 2 problems... The workshop aims at bringing together researchers from different fields (phonologists, phoneticians, psycholinguists, syntacticians, semanticists) in order to create a forum for dialogue and research across disciplines. The notion of domains is recurrent across disciplines with different understandings: - phonology: vowel harmony domains, templates, etc - phonetics: articulatory cycles, intonational domains, etc - syntax: anaphora/binding domains, quantification / scope domains, locality / phases, etc - psycholinguistics: integration units in speech and language, domains of lexical access, etc The workshop will question the different conceptions of the notion of "domains" as defined within or across (sub)disciplines, and in particular, the possible interfaces between these alternative (converging or competing) conceptions. - Phonology / Syntax interface (sandhi, mutations, intonation, etc) - Phonology / Morphology / Syntax Interface (clitic domains, etc) - Syntax / Semantics Interface (mapping between syntactic and semantic domains, etc) We encourage submission of abstracts from different disciplines in linguistics: - (Experimental) Phonetics - Phonology, Morpho-Phonology - Syntax - Syntax-Semantics Interface - Acquisition - Psycholinguistics - Computational Linguistics * Invited Speakers - Cécile Fougeron (CNRS, Paris 3 University) - Heather Goad (McGill University, Montréal) - Célia Jakubowicz (CNRS, Paris 5 University) - Brenda Laca (Paris 8 University) - Éric Mathieu (University College London) - Noël Nguyen (Provence University) - Patrick Sauzet (Toulouse University) - Marilyn Vihman (Bangor University, Wales) * Scientific Comitee - Jean-Pierre Angoujard (Université de Nantes) - Joaquim Brandao de Carvalho (Université Paris 8) - Patricia Cabredo (CNRS, Université Paris 8) - Nick Clements (CNRS, Université Paris 3) - Catherine Colin (Université de Nantes) - Olivier Crouzet (Université de Nantes) - Elisabeth Delais (CNRS, Université de Toulouse) - Hamida Demirdache (Université de Nantes) - Jacques Durand (Université de Toulouse) - Cécile Fougeron (CNRS, Université Paris 3) - Larry Hyman (University of Berkeley, USA) - Célia Jakubowicz (CNRS, Université Paris 5) - Brenda Laca (Université Paris 8) - Jean Lowenstamm (Université de Paris7) - Ora Matushansky (Université Paris 8) - Amina Mettouchi (Université de Nantes) - Léa Nash (Université de Paris 8) - Noël N'Guyen (Université d'Aix en Provence) - Javi Ormaçabal (Université du Pays-Basque, Gastéiz) - Annie Rialland (CNRS, Université Paris 3) - Alain Rouveret (Université de Paris 7) - Patrick Sauzet (Université de Toulouse) - Tobias Scheer (Université de Nice) - Lisa Selkirk (Umass, USA) - Myriam Uribe-Etxabarria (Université du Pays-Basque, Gastéiz) - Jacqueline Vaissière (CNRS, Université Paris 3) - Marilyn Vihman (University of Wales) - Sophie Wauquier-Gravelines (Université de Nantes). * Organisation This workshop is organised by the AAI (Acoustics, Acquisition and Interpretation) research group (Nantes University, France). Do they begin with specific lexical items in a construction and use only those? To what extent do they build from 'verb islands' or 'noun islands' in early constructions? Which constructions emerge first? What criteria should we use in establishing productivity? What makes constructions easy vs. hard to acquire? Can children's bases for inferences about the relevant noun or verb meanings be identified? Are there consistent patterns across children in the acquisition of constructions? Are there differences from one verb type to another, or from intransitive to transitive? Are differences attributable to differences in frequencies in child- directed speech? What cross- linguistic comparisons are available? Which constructions have been considered in studies of children's early syntactic forms? Abstracts are due on or before January 1, 2004; submitters will be informed of all decisions by February 15, 2004. They provide the principal semiotic means for the complexity and diversity of human cultural life. As has long been recognized, no single discipline or methodology is sufficient to capture all the dimensions of this complex and multifaceted phenomenon, which lies at the heart of what it is to be human. The goal of this conference is to contribute to situating the study of language in a contemporary interdisciplinary dialogue. Many of the relevant disciplines have made highly significant theoretical, methodological and empirical advances during the last decade. We call for contributions from scholars and scientists in anthropology, biology, linguistics, philosophy, psychology, semiotics, cognitive and neurosciences, who wish both to impart their insights and findings, and learn from other disciplines. Preference will be given to submissions which emphasize interdisciplinarity, the interaction between culture, mind and language, and/or multi-methodological approaches in language sciences. TOPICS Topics include but are not limited to: · Biological and cultural co-evolution · Comparative study of communication systems · Cognitive and cultural schematization in language · Emergence of language in ontogeny and phylogeny · Language in multi-modal communication · Language and normativity · Language and thought, emotion and consciousness COMMITTEES Local Organizing Committee (Department of Psychology, University of Portsmouth, England) * Mike Fluck * Karl Nunkoosing * Vasu Reddy * Chris Sinha * Vera da Silva * Joerg Zinken International Organizing Committee * Carmen Guarddon Anelo, Departamento de Filologias Extranjeras y sus Lingisticas, Universidad Nacional de Educacion a Distancia, Spain * Raphael Berthele, Departement für Germanistik, Université de Fribourg, Switzerland * Maria Cristóbal, Department of English Philology I. I think you will find that the overall frequency is less revealing and less interesting for what you want to do than the momentary frequency. Both programmes are taught in English or, in the case of language-specific courses, in the target language. Since the University of Amsterdam is interested in attracting talented students, the tuition rates are competitive. The Research MA in Linguistics is directed towards students of proven ability who are interested in conducting research in one of the many areas of linguistics that are studied in the research institutes of the University of Amsterdam. The programmes offer students the opportunity of specializing in a wide range of linguistic subdisciplines including Language acqusitiion and Pathology, Second language Acquisition and Sign Linguistics studied from various theoretical perspectives. The programme lasts two years for selected students with a relevant BA or equivalent, and one year for selected students with a relevant MA or equivalent. The MA in General Linguistics also offers a wide range of specializations, and is aimed at students with a BA in Linguistics or an equivalent programme, involving at least three years of full-time study at university level. The programme lasts one year. Further information about the MA programmes may be found at or requested from . Date: Thu, 27 Nov 2003 15:47:18 +0100 Subject: 1st and 2nd person Message-ID: Dear all, At this moment we are designing an experiment to elicit the various forms of the verbal agreement paradigm in monolingual Dutch children ranging in age between 3 and 6. Our aim is to collect longitudinal and cross-sectional data from the different age groups. We would like to ask whether anyone knows of a technique to elicit 1st and 2nd person singular (present tense). It is crucial that children use the 1st and 2nd person singular pronoun (and that they do not use proper names instead!) and that the children use both the inflected verb as well as the pronoun. We are grateful for any hints, comments and literature suggestions. However, the source for 'the little linguist' is even more venerable. It was used by the London psychologist James Sully, Grote Professor of Mind & Logic at UCL, as the title of Chapter V of his Studies of Childhood (Longmans, Green 1903). This chapter is one of the earliest treatments of the topic of language acquisition, of course. The workshop aims at bringing together researchers from different fields (phonologists, phoneticians, psycholinguists, syntacticians, semanticists) in order to create a forum for dialogue and research across disciplines. The notion of domains is recurrent across disciplines with different understandings: - phonology: vowel harmony domains, templates, etc - phonetics: articulatory cycles, intonational domains, etc - syntax: anaphora/binding domains, quantification / scope domains, locality / phases, etc - psycholinguistics: integration units in speech and language, domains of lexical access, etc The workshop will question the different conceptions of the notion of "domains" as defined within or across (sub)disciplines, and in particular, the possible interfaces between these alternative (converging or competing) conceptions. - Phonology / Syntax interface (sandhi, mutations, intonation, etc) - Phonology / Morphology / Syntax Interface (clitic domains, etc) - Syntax / Semantics Interface (mapping between syntactic and semantic domains, etc) We encourage submission of abstracts from different disciplines in linguistics: - (Experimental) Phonetics - Phonology, Morpho-Phonology - Syntax - Syntax-Semantics Interface - Acquisition - Psycholinguistics - Computational Linguistics * Invited Speakers - Cécile Fougeron (CNRS, Paris 3 University) - Heather Goad (McGill University, Montréal) - Célia Jakubowicz (CNRS, Paris 5 University) - Brenda Laca (Paris 8 University) - Éric Mathieu (University College London) - Noël Nguyen (Provence University) - Patrick Sauzet (Toulouse University) - Marilyn Vihman (Bangor University, Wales) * Scientific Comitee - Jean-Pierre Angoujard (Université de Nantes) - Joaquim Brandao de Carvalho (Université Paris 8) - Patricia Cabredo (CNRS, Université Paris 8) - Nick Clements (CNRS, Université Paris 3) - Catherine Colin (Université de Nantes) - Olivier Crouzet (Université de Nantes) - Elisabeth Delais (CNRS, Université de Toulouse) - Hamida Demirdache (Université de Nantes) - Jacques Durand (Université de Toulouse) - Cécile Fougeron (CNRS, Université Paris 3) - Larry Hyman (University of Berkeley, USA) - Célia Jakubowicz (CNRS, Université Paris 5) - Brenda Laca (Université Paris 8) - Jean Lowenstamm (Université de Paris7) - Ora Matushansky (Université Paris 8) - Amina Mettouchi (Université de Nantes) - Léa Nash (Université de Paris 8) - Noël N'Guyen (Université d'Aix en Provence) - Javi Ormaçabal (Université du Pays-Basque, Gastéiz) - Annie Rialland (CNRS, Université Paris 3) - Alain Rouveret (Université de Paris 7) - Patrick Sauzet (Université de Toulouse) - Tobias Scheer (Université de Nice) - Lisa Selkirk (Umass, USA) - Myriam Uribe-Etxabarria (Université du Pays-Basque, Gastéiz) - Jacqueline Vaissière (CNRS, Université Paris 3) - Marilyn Vihman (University of Wales) - Sophie Wauquier-Gravelines (Université de Nantes). * Organisation This workshop is organised by the AAI (Acoustics, Acquisition and Interpretation) research group (Nantes University, France). - Phonology / Syntax interface (sandhi, mutations, intonation, etc) - Phonology / Morphology / Syntax Interface (clitic domains, etc) - Syntax / Semantics Interface (mapping between syntactic and semantic domains, etc) We encourage submission of abstracts from different disciplines in linguistics: - (Experimental) Phonetics - Phonology, Morpho-Phonology - Syntax - Syntax-Semantics Interface - Acquisition - Psycholinguistics - Computational Linguistics * Invited Speakers - C?cile Fougeron (CNRS, Paris 3 University) - Heather Goad (McGill University, Montr?al) - C?lia Jakubowicz (CNRS, Paris 5 University) - Brenda Laca (Paris 8 University) - ?ric Mathieu (University College London) - No?l Nguyen (Provence University) - Patrick Sauzet (Toulouse University) - Marilyn Vihman (Bangor University, Wales) * Scientific Comitee - Jean-Pierre Angoujard (Universit? de Nantes) - Joaquim Brandao de Carvalho (Universit? Edy Veneziano SUMMARY of INFO on Videorecording material **The CHILDES site has very useful information on digital equipment **** Material bought between one and 3 years ago : - JVC camcorders,- model GR-DVL 100. quality of sound very good; are very robust. are recognized by Macs without problems; come with a remote control which turned out to be a useless feature; flash light is too strong and annoying - Sony handicam ; Digital is delicate - needed to be fixed a couple of times in 3 years; a lot more expensive than VHS-c and it is only really practical if you want to do a lot of direct saving from video to computer to put on CDs (still not really practical to save in computers it takes up a lot of space) - Panasonic NV-DS37EG Digital Video Camera used in conjunction with two mono-directional light microphones - reception Azden WR22-pro . Very good sound and image quality. - Panasonic MiniDV model ) - it's really excellent. The corpus include 70 files of interviews with 70 children ages 2;6 to 5;6. The main lines are romanized and there is an accompanying %mor line. We plan to add a line with Chinese characters soon. Digitized audio is also available, although it is not yet linked to the files. The construction of this database was funded by a grant from the Hong Kong Government Language Fund to Paul Fletcher, Thomas H-T. - Phonology / Syntax interface (sandhi, mutations, intonation, etc) - Phonology / Morphology / Syntax Interface (clitic domains, etc) - Syntax / Semantics Interface (mapping between syntactic and semantic domains, etc) We encourage submission of abstracts from different disciplines in linguistics: - (Experimental) Phonetics - Phonology, Morpho-Phonology - Syntax - Syntax-Semantics Interface - Acquisition - Psycholinguistics - Computational Linguistics * Invited Speakers - C?cile Fougeron (CNRS, Paris 3 University) - Heather Goad (McGill University, Montr?al) - C?lia Jakubowicz (CNRS, Paris 5 University) - Brenda Laca (Paris 8 University) - ?ric Mathieu (University College London) - No?l Nguyen (Provence University) - Patrick Sauzet (Toulouse University) - Marilyn Vihman (Bangor University, Wales) * Scientific Comitee - Jean-Pierre Angoujard (Universit? de Nantes) - Joaquim Brandao de Carvalho (Universit? TOPICS Topics include but are not limited to: ? Biological and cultural co-evolution ? Comparative study of communication systems ? Cognitive and cultural schematization in language ? I think you will find that the overall frequency is less revealing and less interesting for what you want to do than the momentary frequency. It was used by the London psychologist James Sully, Grote Professor of Mind & Logic at UCL, as the title of Chapter V of his Studies of Childhood (Longmans, Green 1903). - Phonology / Syntax interface (sandhi, mutations, intonation, etc) - Phonology / Morphology / Syntax Interface (clitic domains, etc) - Syntax / Semantics Interface (mapping between syntactic and semantic domains, etc) We encourage submission of abstracts from different disciplines in linguistics: - (Experimental) Phonetics - Phonology, Morpho-Phonology - Syntax - Syntax-Semantics Interface - Acquisition - Psycholinguistics - Computational Linguistics * Invited Speakers - C?cile Fougeron (CNRS, Paris 3 University) - Heather Goad (McGill University, Montr?al) - C?lia Jakubowicz (CNRS, Paris 5 University) - Brenda Laca (Paris 8 University) - ?ric Mathieu (University College London) - No?l Nguyen (Provence University) - Patrick Sauzet (Toulouse University) - Marilyn Vihman (Bangor University, Wales) * Scientific Comitee - Jean-Pierre Angoujard (Universit? de Nantes) - Joaquim Brandao de Carvalho (Universit? Send a two page abstract (A4 or letter, times 12) by e-mail to jel2004 at humana.univ-nantes.fr. Abstracts in either English or French will be reviewed. Please provide your affiliation / contact information, together with the exact title of the paper, on a separate sheet. The abstract itself should not show the author's name. A maximum of one sole-author presentation and one co-author presentation can be allocated to any one person. Abstracts will be anonymously reviewed by the Scientific Committee. You may send your summary as a text, MSWord, postscript or pdf file. Note however that, if you're making use of phonetic fonts, it is crucial to send your document in a format which is appropriate for font transmission (either postscript or pdf) or to use the SAMPA coding system. If you do use SAMPA, please state this at the beginning of your abstract. Note that the same constraints apply if you do not use text only in your abstract (syntactic trees, graphs, tables, ...). It is then better to send a postscript or pdf file. Note that these requests are made to ensure that members of the Scientific Committee will not experience any difficulty reading your paper. * Working languages: The working languages will be English and French * Registration fees: Participants: 80 euros before 1st February 2004 ; 100 euros after this date Speakers: 70 euros Students: 30 euros * Important dates: Submission deadline: 15/11/2003 Notification of acceptance: 15/01/2004 Reception of final papers: 15/03/2004 Preliminary programme: 15/04/2004 Workshop: 5-6-7/04/2004 ########################################################################## VERSION FRANCAISE ########################################################################## APPEL ?
