MLU and the Bible

The (Judeo-Christian) Bible is definitely not a simple yardstick. In our
department we've interacted with a number of people interested in
translating the Bible into hitherto (linguistically) undescribed
languages. One problem that arises is that when the target *culture* is
very different from that of the writers of the Bible, a lot of cultural
information has to be built into the translation, thus lengthening it by
quite a lot. I think we need to search elsewhere for our yardstick - or
yardstick-S.
