Four visiting scholars will join the programme for a period of three months at the University of Potsdam (Germany) during the summer term 2009. The EMCL programme is part of the Erasmus Mundus initiative of the European Union (see http://ec.europa.eu/education/programmes/mundus/index_en.html for information on the initiative). The Erasmus Mundus programme provides a scholar mobility grant of EUR 4.000 per month for visiting scholars from non-EU countries accepted to the programme. Please find further information about the course, the application process as well as contact info below. The EMCL programme The Erasmus Mundus EMCL ('European Master's in Clinical Linguistics') course is a 15 month full-time interdisciplinary and transnational university programme at Master's level. It provides integrated training in theoretical and experimental neurosciences and psycholinguistics with clinical issues. The aim of the Master's Course is to train highly qualified advanced students who are excellently prepared for research work and PhD programmes in the above fields. The transnational consortium comprises four universities: Groningen (NL), Joensuu (FI), Milano-Bicocca (IT) and Potsdam (DE). The programme consists of three terms: the core courses offered in the first term aim at providing the students with general knowledge about the fields mentioned above. During the second and third term, the students attend specialised courses. For the second term, students may choose to move from their first host university to another one, while all students meet at the University of Potsdam during the third term. To finish the programme successfully, students write a Master's thesis. All courses are taught in English. The Erasmus Mundus mobility scholarship for visiting scholars The programme recruits students as well as visiting scholars worldwide. In order to encourage application by visiting scholars from all over the world and thus give the EMCL-programme a strong global profile, visiting scholars from non-EU countries accepted to the programme will receive an Erasmus Mundus scholar mobility grant (EUR 4.000 per month + a one-time lump sum for travel expenses of EUR 1,000). Prerequisites for application as visiting scholar to the EMCL programme are a PhD degree and an active and excellent research record in the fields mentioned above and an excellent command of English. When, where and what? Visiting scholars will join the programme for three months during the third (i.e. summer) term at the University of Potsdam (mid April - mid July 2009). They are expected to actively participate in the programme by offering a regular seminar, present their own work in research seminars and provide support and advice for the participating students and their research for the final theses. Application information We invite highly qualified scholars from all over the world to submit their applications until January 15, 2008 (application deadline for the 2008/09 programme). For more detailed information on the programme, please visit our website at www.emcl-mundus.com You can find the application form and further contact info at www.emcl-mundus.com/html/scholars.html For further information, applicants may also contact Dr. Frank Burchert (burchert at ling.uni-potsdam.de). --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Info-CHILDES" group. The abstract of this article is below. - Kimary Shahin -------------- Abstract Most analyses of discourse pragmatics assume a quiet setting that does not affect the interaction. This study examines two common, communicationally hostile environmental contexts that make demands on the perceptual, cognitive, and pragmatic dimensions of language and multimodal communication. It identifies strategies which discourse participants use to recover the information lost or degraded in noisy conversational interaction, and the repairs and conversational strategies they use if they recognize that communication has failed. We recorded the conversational discourse interaction of 6 normally-hearing adults in a restaurant setting and 24 normally-hearing children in elementary-school classrooms, using ear-level binaural microphones, head-mounted bullet cameras, and tripod-mounted video cameras. This yielded extensive audiotape and videotape data from the perspectives of individual listeners and speakers, and information about the interaction among participants. Our data indicate that the strategies employed in these settings are similar to those employed by people who are hard-of-hearing, and that usage-based linguistic theories and cognitivist theories of language processing, interaction, and pragmatics, that ignore language perception, are inadequate. -----Original Message----- > Date: Wed Dec 12 08:49:05 PST 2007 > From: "zhang li1231" > Subject: questions on MLT of children > To: info-childes at googlegroups.com > > Dear all, > Recently I am interested in children's participation in the > conversation and have learned that Mean Length of Turns is a basic measure > of children's conversational skills.I want to have a further study on this > measure, however, could hardly find any. What ever does Mean Length of Turns > means? Is there any study on MLT of children?Or is there any effective > measures that can reflect children's turn-taking in the > conversation? Moreover,if I want to know how children can become an active > partner in a conversation by analyzing children's spontaneous language > samples, what project can I take?Could you please give me some > suggestion? Thanks so much. > -- > Elly > East China Normal University > > > --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Info-CHILDES" group. THE LINGUISTS is the first documentary supported by the National Science Foundation to ever make it to Sundance. The trailer is at http://www.thelinguists.com. Here's a brief synopsis: It is estimated that of 7,000 languages in the world, half will be gone by the end of this century. THE LINGUISTS follows David Harrison and Gregory Anderson, scientists racing to documet languages on the verge of extinction. In Siberia, India, and Bolivia, the linguists' resolve is tested by the very forces silencing languages: institutionalized racism and violent economic unrest. David and Greg's journey takes them deep into the heart of the cultures, knowledge, and communities at risk when a language dies.
