From tobias.haug at signlang-assessment.info Sat Jul 5 07:55:31 2008 From: tobias.haug at signlang-assessment.info (Tobias Haug) Date: Sat, 5 Jul 2008 09:55:31 +0200 Subject: Inquiry: construct defintion for language tests Message-ID: Dear all, For my ongoing research on developing tests for sign languages, I have already posted inquiries regarding spoken language tests before on this list and always received a lot of support – I want to thank the list for the input. Today, I am again contacting you with an inquiry on language testing. Those of you who are involved in the process of language test development and/or adaptation (both theory and practice) know that one important step in language test construction is how the researcher defines (in correspondence with the purpose of the test) the test construct, e.g., “language proficiency”, “communicative competence” (e.g., Haynes; Canale & Swain; Bachman) or “language comprehension”? My test targets language comprehension in deaf children 4-8 years old. I am acquainted with the most common theories on language acquisition, but for those of you on the list who work in language test development, I was wondering on which theories you personally base your construct definition? Any suggestions and ideas are welcome. Many thanks in advance. Greeting from sunny Zurich, Switzerland. Brief description Phon is a software program that greatly facilitates a number of tasks required for the analysis of phonological development. Phon supports multimedia data linkage, unit segmentation, multiple-blind transcription, automatic labeling of data, and systematic comparisons between target (model) and actual (produced) phonological forms. All of these functions are accessible through a user-friendly graphical interface. Databases managed within Phon can also be queried using a powerful search interface. This software program works on both Mac OS X and Windows platforms, is fully compliant with the CHILDES format, and supports Unicode font encoding. Phon is being made freely available to the community as open-source software. It meets specific needs related to the study of first language phonological development (including babbling), second language acquisition, and speech disorders. Phon will facilitate data exchange among researchers and the construction of a shared PhonBank database, another new initiative within CHILDES to support methodological and empirical needs of research in all ares of phonological development. Earlier development of Phon was funded by grants from National Science Foundation, Canada Fund for Innovation, Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, Petro-Canada Fund for Young Innovators, and the Office of the Vice- President (Research) and the Faculty of Arts at Memorial University of Newfoundland. In other words, all of these systems work fine. To learn more about them, please go to http://childes.psy.cmu.edu/morgrams/ If you have specific problems with these things, please either contact me directly or else post questions to the chibolts at googlegroups.com mailing list.
