The deadline to apply for 2009 admission to the Joint Doctoral Program
in Special Education (University of California, Berkeley and San
Francisco State University) is December 1, 2008 (see program
information below). Areas of specialization include typical/atypical
language acquisition; bilingualism, second language acquisition and
English Language Learners; and deafness and sign language. For more

Joint Doctoral Program in
Special Education
The Doctoral Program in Special Education,
offered jointly by San Francisco State University and
the University of California, Berkeley, culminates
in a Ph.D. degree. The program draws on the
strengths of both universities in developing
leaders and research specialists in the field of
special education.
Students select an area of academic specialization in
both special and general education. Faculty and
program resources on the two campuses are
used to develop advanced knowledge of theory
and research in an area of exceptionality. Specializations
include human development; language
and literacy; bilingualism; technology; educational
policy and administration; early childhood;
mild/moderate disabilities; moderate/severe
disabilities; autism; vision impairments; deafness
and deaf education; and other areas selected by
students in consultation with faculty advisers.
In the program students develop three areas of
emphasis or specialization.
Courses are taken on both university campuses,
and faculty are drawn from both institutions.
