Typically developing (TD) bilinguals often look like the children with Specific Language Impairement (SLI), creating methodological and clinical diagnostic confounds. Medical, language and educational professionals have limited test instruments to distinguish language impaired migrant children from those who will eventually catch up to their monolingual peers. As a result, folk wisdom reigns, often carrying the view that bilingual children with language disorders should be educated in a single language, usually not the language of the home. In recent years, several research groups have taken upon themselves to disentangle bilingualism and SLI by establishing the relative contribution of the each to impaired language performance. The problem is that the machines required to play these tapes are now virtually all non-functional. And there are no "new" units of this type that one can purchase. I have been working with Canaan Media in New Jersey to rescue old audio and video through digitization. The old reel-to-reel audio is not at all a problem and the machines that read these tapes will last still for decades. However, the Sony and Toshiba machines that read the half-inch helical tapes seem to be more sensitive. Canaan Media has three of the Sony AV-3650 machines, but none of them are operational. They have asked me to post a note to info-childes asking if anyone has operational machines like the Sony AV-3650. If so, we would be happy to pay for shipping costs to send these to New Jersey. Along the same lines, if you have tapes of this type and hope to be able to recover the data on them, we are now close to the end of the road. The CHILDES Project can help on this, if there are transcripts, and if we can locate surviving machines. Otherwise, we may have to decide that this media type is now officially dead. Several authors had pointed out that the time from the announcement to the deadline was a bit tight and had asked for a few more weeks. -- Brian MacWhinney Here is the call for papers again: The Journal of Child Language is soliciting submissions for a special issue entitled ‘Computational Models of Child Language Learning.’ This research area has seen a recent rapid growth, based on the increased availability of corpus data, better methods for annotating and parsing corpora, and innovations in computational modeling. Submissions are invited for models of all levels of linguistic structure including lexicon, syntax, phonology, gesture, conversation, and semantics. Modeling may focus on monolingual or bilingual acquisition in both normal and language-delayed populations. Models may make use of any well-specified computational framework, including but not limited to connectionist modeling, Bayesian analysis, production systems, or logical analysis. Typically, models will use corpus data as input and observed patterns in the child's productions as output. However, other well-specified computational frameworks are also invited. The guest editor for this issue is Brian MacWhinney. Papers will go through the regular review process. They should be submitted electronically though Manuscript Central (http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jcl ) and should follow the regular guidelines for the Journal. Authors should indicate that their paper is to be considered for the special issue. The deadline for submissions is November 28, 2008. Questions about possible submissions should be sent to Brian MacWhinney macw at cmu.edu --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Info-CHILDES" group. Applications are particularly encouraged from candidates with interests in EEG methods and/or Hearing research, though we welcome other specialisms, especially those that complement existing strengths in Cognitive, Developmental, Social and Neuropsychology. The Department of Psychology was graded 5A in RAE 2001 and with a maximum 24 points in the QAA teaching assessment exercise. We are well-resourced with eye-tracking, 3D movement registration and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation facilities, a new 128-channel EEG facility with adult and infant recording facilities, plus dedicated laboratory facilities for computer-based experimentation, including a new suite of integrated fully-insulated acoustic booths with control room. Recently, we established the Sensory Neuroscience Unit as an international focus for research in neuroscience and neuropsychology. The department has strong links with local NHS hospitals and other departments in the University (e.g., Clinical Psychology; Applied Statistics). We also have collaborative links with other universities (e.g., for fMRI facilities). The department has ESRC-recognised PhD and Masters programmes and a buoyant undergraduate community, and has secured over £8m in research and training funds in the past five years. We offer a supportive and collegiate environment, with moderate and carefully managed teaching and administration loads. You should be a prominent internationally recognised researcher, with a proven track record of publications, funding and supervision, and demonstrated leadership in research and teaching. This post is available from 1 April 2009. Informal enquiries can be made to the Head of Department, Professor Tom Ormerod (Tel: 01524 593164, email: t.ormerod at lancaster.ac.uk). Many thanks. --Brian MacWhinney --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Info-CHILDES" group. Several authors had pointed out that the time from the announcement to the deadline was a bit tight and had asked for a few more weeks. -- Brian MacWhinney Here is the call for papers again: The Journal of Child Language is soliciting submissions for a special issue entitled ?Computational Models of Child Language Learning.? This research area has seen a recent rapid growth, based on the increased availability of corpus data, better methods for annotating and parsing corpora, and innovations in computational modeling. The department has ESRC-recognised PhD and Masters programmes and a buoyant undergraduate community, and has secured over ?8m in research and training funds in the past five years.
