Assistants on the projects at LARC: * Record, transcribe, and analyze child and adult learners' spontaneous speech * Develop materials for use in production and comprehension tasks * Perform studies with child and adult participants * Analyze spontaneous speech data and experimental data * Recruit child and adult participants * Supervise students and interns working on the projects * Keep the laboratory running smoothly LARC work involves constant contact with children, parents and other caregivers, adolescent and adult participants, daycare and nursery school workers, and instructors of adults learning English as a second language. It also requires the coordination of many different activities. Assistants' patience, courtesy, reliability, and maturity are thus important. Assistants must work well with children, adolescents, and adults; understand and accommodate the concerns and needs of children and caregivers; respect individuals from a range of different backgrounds; and be highly organized, reliable, and punctual. Using this new format, we have updated all the transcripts in the CHILDES and TalkBank databases that are linked to either audio or video. CLAN is still backward compatible and can play materials formatted in the old system, but when producing new bullets, it will use the new format. In the older system, each link included the media file name. When expanded, these links or bullets had this format: ∙%snd:"CLIP"_1927_4086∙ The new format is simply: ∙1927_4086∙ In the new system, the identity of the media file is not repeated in every single bullet, but only once at the top of the file. It is placed into a tier that has this shape: @Media: clip.wav, audio Here the name of the media is clip.wav and it has an audio format. There are two fields in the @Media header. The first is for the media file name. You do not need to include the extension of the media file name, but you can if you wish. Crucially, each transcript should be associated with one and only one media file. This is necessary to provide good compatibility with programs like Elan, ANVIL, Exmaralda, and so on. Also, to keep your project well organized it is best if the media file name matches the transcript file name. The second field in the @Media header tells whether the media is audio, video, or missing. If you have files with bullets in the old format, you can change them to the new format using this command: fixbullets -n *.cha However, you will have to enter the @Media header by hand yourself, one for each transcript that is linked to media. This corpus is entitled the FerFuLice corpus after the two contributors, Raquel Férnandez Fuertes (Valladolid) and Juana Liceras (Ottawa). The corpus is included in the Bilingual segment of CHILDES. Many thanks to Raquel and Juana for this excellent contribution. -- Brian MacWhinney This corpus contains spontaneous productions from a longitudinal study of two English/Spanish bilingual identical twins with the pseudonyms of Simon and Leo. They were born into a middle-class family in Spain. The father is a native speaker of Peninsular Spanish and the mother is a native speaker of American English. The father always speaks to the children in Spanish and the mother always addresses them in English. The parents generally communicate in Spanish with each other, except on summers when they travel to the United States for approximately two months or when a monolingual English speaker is present. Therefore, we are dealing with bilingual English/Spanish first language acquisition in a monolingual-Spanish social context, a type of bilingualism that is referred to in the literature as individual bilingualism (Bhatia and Ritchie, 2004). During the first year, the mother was the primary caretaker of the twins. The father was present all day on weekends and less on weekdays. At age 1;10, the twins started going to day care for 3 hours a day on weekdays, where the language of the staff and other children was Spanish. Apart from the mother, additional contact with English was provided by occasional visits by the maternal grandparents and during the two-month visits to the United States every summer. The twins and participants other than the investigators have pseudonyms to protect their privacy. If names of children or participants other than the investigators appear in the recordings, only the first initial or first and second initial are transcribed. When it was not clear in the recording which of the twins was speaking (mainly because they were off- screen) we have used SOL (Simon or Leo) instead of S (Simon) or L (Leo). 1. Procedure The data we have collected cover the age range of 1;01 to 6;11. A total of 178 sessions were recorded on videotape and DVD, of which 117 are in an English context (i.e., with an English interlocutor such as the interviewer or their mother) and 61 in a Spanish context (i.e., with a Spanish interlocutor such as the interviewer or their father). The Spanish recordings were made at intervals of 2-3 weeks until age 3;00 (with some interruptions during the summer holidays), and then once a month after that. The English recordings were sometimes made more frequently, but the sessions are usually much shorter and recorded on consecutive days. The children were recorded in naturalistic settings, usually at home, and appear together in the majority of the sessions. They were mostly engaged in normal play activities with the interlocutor. Videotaping was done by Raquel Fernández Fuertes, K. Todd Spradlin, and Esther Álvarez de la Fuente. Transcription in Valladolid was done by Esther Álvarez de la Fuente, Susana Muñiz Fernández, Isabel Parrado Román, K. Todd Spradlin, Elisa Rosado Villegas, Israel de la Fuente Velasco, and Alfonso Martínez Pérez. Transcription in Ottawa was done by Rocío Pérez-Tattam, Tamara Vardomskaya, Anahí Alba de la Fuente, K. Todd Spradlin, Marco Llamazares, Melissa Grimes, Shauna Flynn, and Deidre Butters. 2. Inventory of sessions and files In the tables below we indicate the recordings that we have made in a Spanish-language context and in an English-language context. The labels SP (Spanish) and EN (English) indicate the language of the transcript. In both cases we indicate the number of sessions we recorded and the number of chat documents/files they correspond to. The transcripts are numbered according to the session and labeled (01), (02) and so forth to mark a cut-off point at 1000 utterances within each session. Although we tried to maintain a strict separation between the two languages in the recordings, mixing of languages occurs sometimes (we have indicated this in the tables below). More specifically, its goal is to determine the extent to which the quantity and quality of the input to which children are exposed as part of early English programmes (VVTO in Dutch) has a direct effect on their linguistic proficiency. Using this new format, we have updated all the transcripts in the CHILDES and TalkBank databases that are linked to either audio or video. CLAN is still backward compatible and can play materials formatted in the old system, but when producing new bullets, it will use the new format. In the older system, each link included the media file name. When expanded, these links or bullets had this format: ?%snd:"CLIP"_1927_4086? The new format is simply: ?1927_4086? In the new system, the identity of the media file is not repeated in every single bullet, but only once at the top of the file. It is placed into a tier that has this shape: @Media: clip.wav, audio Here the name of the media is clip.wav and it has an audio format. There are two fields in the @Media header. The first is for the media file name. You do not need to include the extension of the media file name, but you can if you wish. Crucially, each transcript should be associated with one and only one media file. This is necessary to provide good compatibility with programs like Elan, ANVIL, Exmaralda, and so on. Also, to keep your project well organized it is best if the media file name matches the transcript file name. The second field in the @Media header tells whether the media is audio, video, or missing. If you have files with bullets in the old format, you can change them to the new format using this command: fixbullets -n *.cha However, you will have to enter the @Media header by hand yourself, one for each transcript that is linked to media. This corpus is entitled the FerFuLice corpus after the two contributors, Raquel F?rnandez Fuertes (Valladolid) and Juana Liceras (Ottawa). The corpus is included in the Bilingual segment of CHILDES. The readme for the corpus is included below. Many thanks to Raquel and Juana for this excellent contribution. -- Brian MacWhinney This corpus contains spontaneous productions from a longitudinal study of two English/Spanish bilingual identical twins with the pseudonyms of Simon and Leo. They were born into a middle-class family in Spain. The father is a native speaker of Peninsular Spanish and the mother is a native speaker of American English. The father always speaks to the children in Spanish and the mother always addresses them in English. The parents generally communicate in Spanish with each other, except on summers when they travel to the United States for approximately two months or when a monolingual English speaker is present. Therefore, we are dealing with bilingual English/Spanish first language acquisition in a monolingual-Spanish social context, a type of bilingualism that is referred to in the literature as individual bilingualism (Bhatia and Ritchie, 2004). During the first year, the mother was the primary caretaker of the twins. The father was present all day on weekends and less on weekdays. At age 1;10, the twins started going to day care for 3 hours a day on weekdays, where the language of the staff and other children was Spanish. Apart from the mother, additional contact with English was provided by occasional visits by the maternal grandparents and during the two-month visits to the United States every summer. The twins and participants other than the investigators have pseudonyms to protect their privacy. If names of children or participants other than the investigators appear in the recordings, only the first initial or first and second initial are transcribed. When it was not clear in the recording which of the twins was speaking (mainly because they were off- screen) we have used SOL (Simon or Leo) instead of S (Simon) or L (Leo). 1. Procedure The data we have collected cover the age range of 1;01 to 6;11. A total of 178 sessions were recorded on videotape and DVD, of which 117 are in an English context (i.e., with an English interlocutor such as the interviewer or their mother) and 61 in a Spanish context (i.e., with a Spanish interlocutor such as the interviewer or their father). The Spanish recordings were made at intervals of 2-3 weeks until age 3;00 (with some interruptions during the summer holidays), and then once a month after that. The English recordings were sometimes made more frequently, but the sessions are usually much shorter and recorded on consecutive days. The children were recorded in naturalistic settings, usually at home, and appear together in the majority of the sessions. They were mostly engaged in normal play activities with the interlocutor. Videotaping was done by Raquel Fern?ndez Fuertes, K. Todd Spradlin, and Esther ?lvarez de la Fuente. Transcription in Valladolid was done by Esther ?lvarez de la Fuente, Susana Mu?iz Fern?ndez, Isabel Parrado Rom?n, K. In both cases we indicate the number of sessions we recorded and the number of chat documents/files they correspond to. The transcripts are numbered according to the session and labeled (01), (02) and so forth to mark a cut-off point at 1000 utterances within each session. Although we tried to maintain a strict separation between the two languages in the recordings, mixing of languages occurs sometimes (we have indicated this in the tables below). This PhD position investigates the acquisition of English in the Dutch primary classroom. More specifically, its goal is to determine the extent to which the quantity and quality of the input to which children are exposed as part of early English programmes (VVTO in Dutch) has a direct effect on their linguistic proficiency. It will involve a longitudinal study of the morph osyntactic and lexical development of several groups of children who systematically differ in terms of input quantity (number of hours per week) and quality (linguistic proficiency of the teacher). As part of her/his training, the PhD student will take courses offered by the National Graduate School in Linguistics (LOT). Qualifications We are looking for an ambitious student who is willing and able to work in a team consisting of linguists and language teachers. The candidate must have an MA degree in hand one month before the starting date. Specific requirements are: An MA degree in linguistics, education or psycholinguistics (either with a heavy focus on language/ linguistics). Candidate should have a working knowledge of Dutch and near-native English. Terms of employment The successful candidate is offered a one-year employment contract as PhD (?Assistant in Opleiding, or AiO? research trainee) with the possibility of renewal with three years maximum, after evaluation. The PhD will receive a gross monthly salary of ? 2,042.- during the first year and increasing to ? 2.612.- in the fourth year on a fulltime basis. The PhD will be offered the opportunity to participate in the "Academic Professionalism" scheme, which involves coaching and courses in general skills. We also offer a pension scheme, a holiday allowance of 8% per year, a end-of-year allowance of 8,3 % and flexible employment conditions.
