Job description

The current opening is for:
PhD project Investigating Early English in Dutch primary schools
(vacancy number 68907; preferable starting date 1-9-2009).

This PhD position investigates the acquisition of English in the Dutch
primary classroom. More specifically, its goal is to determine the
extent to which the quantity and quality of the input to which
children are exposed as part of early English programmes (VVTO in
Dutch) has a direct effect on their linguistic proficiency. It will
involve a longitudinal study of the morph osyntactic and lexical
development of several groups of children who systematically differ in
terms of input quantity (number of hours per week) and quality
(linguistic proficiency of the teacher).

Goal
The PhD project involves training in research and completion of a PhD
dissertation. As part of her/his training, the PhD student will take
courses offered by the National Graduate School in Linguistics (LOT).

Qualifications

We are looking for an ambitious student who is willing and able to
work in a team consisting of linguists and language teachers. The
candidate must have an MA degree in hand one month before the starting
date. Specific requirements are: An MA degree in linguistics,
education or psycholinguistics (either with a heavy focus on language/
linguistics). Candidate should have a working knowledge of Dutch and
near-native English.

Terms of employment

The successful candidate is offered a one-year employment contract as
PhD (“Assistant in Opleiding, or AiO” research trainee) with the
possibility of renewal with three years maximum, after evaluation. The
PhD will receive a gross monthly salary of  € 2,042.- during the first
year and increasing to € 2.612.- in the fourth year on a fulltime
basis. The PhD will be offered the opportunity to participate in the
"Academic Professionalism" scheme, which involves coaching and courses
in general skills. We also offer a pension scheme, a holiday allowance
of 8% per year, a end-of-year allowance of 8,3 % and flexible
employment conditions. Conditions are based on the Collective
Employment Agreement of the Dutch Universities. A complementary
teaching contract in the English department might be available. UIL-
