There is not a great deal of information about this in the manual, so perhaps I could post a query on the list. We have been putting the precodes first in the speaker tier, for reasons of readability, and also because it makes computer analysis of the tier a bit easier. So we have, for instance: *IRI: [- spa] +< no eso es totalmente natural . However, when we run CHECK on these files, we get error messages saying: Item '+<' must be used at the beginning of tier. Presumably this means that we have to write: *IRI: +< [- spa] no eso es totalmente natural . So: (a) Is it the case that precodes must follow markers like +< ? (b) Are there any other markers or other things to which this applies? (c) Are there any other "gotchas" we should watch out for when using precodes? As a subsidiary question, I assume that using the 3-letter ISO-639-3 or ISO-639-2 codes (http://www.sil.org/iso639-3/codes.asp) instead of the 2- letter ISO-639-1 codes is OK, and fits in with the trend in CLAN towards those. -- Pob hwyl / Best wishes Kevin Donnelly kevindonnelly.org.uk -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Info-CHILDES" group. From aliyah.morgenstern at gmail.com Wed Dec 7 10:37:04 2011 From: aliyah.morgenstern at gmail.com (Aliyah MORGENSTERN) Date: Wed, 7 Dec 2011 11:37:04 +0100 Subject: SYMPOSIUM: Self-Talk Message-ID: Call for papers International symposium Sorbonne Paris Cité Self-Talk Forms and practices Dates : September 10th-12th 2012 What is a monologue? Under what conditions may it arise? If we consider theater monologue, logorrhea, children’s egocentric language and even psychoanalysis as forms of self-talk, are there common criteria for defining monologues or do these forms vary radically? How can we describe them, both in terms of their linguistic properties and as expressions of their speakers’ subjectivity? The issues raised by monologues are numerous. Rarely studied from a multidisciplinary perspective, monologues allow human beings to question how they relate to the self, to language and to others. A multidisciplinary perspective would permit both a better grasp of the specifics of each type of monologue and how they relate to each other, as well as facilitate a more fruitful interchange of knowledge and conceptual tools among various fields. We propose a multidisciplinary conference addressing these questions. The conference will consist of 30-minute scientific presentations and plenary talks alternating with live performances by guest musicians, comedians, and story-tellers. Invited keynote speakers - Kirill O. Thompson, National Taiwan University (Philosophy) http://www.theberendelfoundation.com/node/49 - Anders Holmberg, Newcastle University (Linguistics) http://www.ncl.ac.uk/elll/people/profile/anders.holmberg Special guest - Katherine Nelson, City University of New York (Psychology) http://web.gc.cuny.edu/dept/psych/subprogs/devpsy/nelson.html We welcome researchers from all involved fields to submit a 500-word abstract to the following address : monologue at univ-paris3.fr Deadline for submission: February 29th 2012 Notification of acceptance: May 4th 2012 Collective and multidisciplinary research is encouraged. We are tagging at the word level, so we can get word-counts by language, but we're using precodes where all the words in an utterance belong to one language. We don't use mix, but it's an interesting idea - although we can generate this, precoding it might be a useful shorthand. > We have no problem running MLT, CHECK, or GEM. We do not use MOR. We're reading the chat files into a database and using that to do things like sequence analysis based on POS, export to a gloss-aligned pdf, and export to chat file. So we want to make sure that the chat export is a valid one, and it turned out that an assumption we had made about the position of the precodes was incorrect! MOR isn't available for Welsh, so we developed our own tagger, which also handles English and Spanish. -- Pob hwyl / Best wishes Kevin Donnelly kevindonnelly.org.uk -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Info-CHILDES" group. The ICPC has met annually for over 30 years in the US and abroad. This year it returns to the part of the US where it originated: the Midwest. ICPC has evolved into a forum for talks, posters, and collegial discussions on all aspects of children’s speech-sound development. Presentations from recent meetings have covered a broad range of topics, including clinical topics, computational modeling, the relationship between continuous phonetic variation and abstract phonological knowledge, implications for phonological theory, typical and atypical development in infants, toddlers and older children, second-language issues, and both oral and signed languages. This list is by no means exclusive: we invite proposals for talks and posters covering any aspect of children's speech-sound development. Following the child phonology conference tradition, we will have no invited speakers. An absolutely bare-bones skeleton of a conference Web site can be found at http://www.tc.umn.edu/~munso005/ChildPhonology/. It will be updated and beautified as the days and week progress. Please note that this Web site links to the program from the 2011 ICPC, and includes links to slides and posters from that conference. A visit to that part of the Web site should give potential attendees a sense of the conference's flavor. Abstracts should be submitted via the Easy Chair Web site, https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=icpc20120. Authors should indicate whether they prefer to present an oral paper or a poster. Oral presentations will be allocated a 30-minute slot each, to include a 5-10 minute discussion. Posters will be displayed in dedicated poster sessions that do not overlap with oral presentations. The final format of the presentation will be decided on by the committee. Abstracts should be 500 words long, with an additional page for references, examples, Figures, tables, and tableaux, if needed. Abstracts will be peer-reviewed anonymously and independently by three members of the scientific committee. Key dates Abstract submission: January 15, 2012 Notification of outcome: February 1, 2012 Pre-registration begins: January 15, 2012 Program published on website: February 28, 2012 Registration Early registration, non-student: $100 Early registration, student or postdoc: $50 Late registration (after 1 May 2012), regular: $125 Late registration (after 1 May 2012), student: $60 The conference will be held at the McNamara Alumni Center (http://www.mac-events.org/) on the University of Minnesota campus. Blocks of rooms will be reserved at three local hotels, one of which is mere parking lot's distance from McNamara, and one of which is in the heart of Minneapolis's vibrant downtown. The conference dinner will be a Thai food buffet held on the 35th floor of a residential building in downtown Minneapolis, featuring the best urban views (heck, the ONLY true urban views) that the upper Midwest has to offer. ICPC will be held immediately prior to two other conferences in the Upper Midwest. The following weekend, the International Society on Infant Studies will host its biennial conference in Minneapolis, and the Symposium for Research on Child Language Disorders will be held in Madison, Wisconsin, a mere four-hour drive or bus ride from Minneapolis. Individuals traveling long distances can maximize their trips by attending two conferences. From aliyah.morgenstern at gmail.com Wed Dec 7 10:37:04 2011 From: aliyah.morgenstern at gmail.com (Aliyah MORGENSTERN) Date: Wed, 7 Dec 2011 11:37:04 +0100 Subject: SYMPOSIUM: Self-Talk Message-ID: Call for papers International symposium Sorbonne Paris Cit? Self-Talk Forms and practices Dates : September 10th-12th 2012 What is a monologue? Under what conditions may it arise? If we consider theater monologue, logorrhea, children?s egocentric language and even psychoanalysis as forms of self-talk, are there common criteria for defining monologues or do these forms vary radically? How can we describe them, both in terms of their linguistic properties and as expressions of their speakers? subjectivity? January 15, 2012 Preliminary Website: http://www.tc.umn.edu/~munso005/ChildPhonology/ *** The International Child Phonology Conference (ICPC) 2012 will take place at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, June 4-6, 2012. The ICPC has met annually for over 30 years in the US and abroad. This year it returns to the part of the US where it originated: the Midwest. ICPC has evolved into a forum for talks, posters, and collegial discussions on all aspects of children?s speech-sound development.
