The conference will be held June 4th-6th at The University of Minnesota - Twin Cities. The ICPC has met annually for over 30 years in the US and abroad. ICPC has evolved into a forum for talks, posters, and collegial discussions on all aspects of children's speech-sound development. This year, ICPC will be held immediately prior to two other conferences in the Upper Midwest. The following weekend, the International Society on Infant Studies will host it's biennial conference in Minneapolis, and the Symposium for Research on Child Language Disorders will be held in Madison, WI, a mere four-hour drive or bus ride from Minneapolis. Individuals traveling long distances can maximize their trips by attending two conferences. The ICPC organizing committee invites you to visit the conference website to view more details and to register, and to view the final conference schedule and abstracts: Website: http://www.tc.umn.edu/%7Emunso005/ChildPhonology/ Schedule with Abstracts: http://www.tc.umn.edu/%7Emunso005/ChildPhonology/schedule.html -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Info-CHILDES" group. In OS X you can go to the Finder Menu (the Apple) into System Preferences... and there select Language & Text in the upper icon list. In Language & Text select Input Sources and activate for example Keyboard & Character Viewer and at the bottom "Show input menu in menu bar". This will show you a flag for your selected keyboard in the upper right menu bar of the Finder. If you select this, you can for example switch keyboard layouts, if you have selected some of them, and you can in particular select "Show Character Viewer". This will give you the full font inventory on your Mac. Note that the new operating systems have usually installed a full set of Unicode fonts. If you select any of the characters in the Character Viewer, it will be pasted in Word, or any other editor or program you use. Same functionalities exist in Windows 7. Look under Start > All Programs > Accessories > System (or something like this, can't check, do not have one around right now). Also, on common Linux distros you will find similar possibilities, and you can use them in OpenOffice or alternative Office distributions. You can just drag and drop the symbols to Word to insert them. However, the quickest (and in the end the most convenient) solution would be to use an IPA keyboard on your Mac, the one by SIL is quite good: http://scripts.sil.org/cms/scripts/page.php?item_id=ipa-sil_keyboard. Understanding, constructing or retelling coherent narratives contribute to progress in literacy skills (Dickinson et al., 2003; Dobson, 2005; Makdissi & Boisclair, 2006) and are in general good predictors of school success and disposition to literacy (Snow, Burns, & Griffin, 1998). It is therefore important to understand the processes underlying the development of narrative abilities as well as to reveal the conditions leading the child to further develop and/or to better utilize the competences implied in this activity. The goals of this international conference are threefold. First, it aims to report on recent advances in narrative development, focusing particularly on the development of the capacity to express causal relations, be them physical or psychological, the internal states and the different points of view of the characters. Secondly, and particularly important for this Conference, it aims to consider the conditions that stimulate and promote narrative skills, taking into account short term and long term intervention procedures as well as educational, developmental, linguistic and socio-cognitive variables. Thirdly, it will focus on the interrelations between oral narrative skills and children’s advances in literacy in their early schooling. These issues will be examined with an interdisciplinary approach by confronting the points of view of scholars of different disciplines like developmental psychology, linguistics and education. The Conference will be organized around plenary presentations, poster sessions and will allow time for discussion. The Conference addresses specialists in narrative development and literacy, childhood professionals like teachers, educators, speech therapists or book publishers, as well as parents. According to the company, transcription and captioning of video and audio content can now be performed automatically and more accurately, replacing costly and cumbersome manual transcription methods. The Koemei Web Service platform enables transcription of video and audio content for captioning, indexing, search and discovery, and search engine optimization. At the core of Koemei Web Service is its speech decoding engine, which converts the audio of every speaker into text, using the cloud-based multi-speaker speech recognition platform and API for transcription of video and audio content. Koemei Web Services also offers the following capabilities: a cloud-based self-service platform and API so there's no need for technical skills in speech; users can add capabilities with simple HTTP requests using a RESTful API. a wiki-type edit platform for editing by a closed or open community for accessibility compliance. the ability to accept input from various sources (language model, pronunciation dictionary, acoustic models) into a single decoder for greater accuracy. "Koemei Web Services meets the need in business, media, governments, education, and developers who produce an ever-increasing amount of video but are limited to current manual, and costly, transcription methods," said Temitope Ola, co-founder and CEO, Koemei, in a statement. "We now offer a cloud-based, fully-automated machine transcription solution for enterprises to caption, index, and monetize their content. "Current solutions are manual and costly ranging from $2.00 to $5.00 a minute and are not suitable or sustainable for large scale transcription needs of the media, government, or education. In the U.S. alone, video and audio producers lose close to $5 billion annually through the inability of outdated manual methods to transcribe large amounts of content," Ola said. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPl0i5_l3X0 -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Info-CHILDES" group. Thirdly, it will focus on the interrelations between oral narrative skills and children?s advances in literacy in their early schooling.
