Background
The newly formed LDDRG (Language Development and Disorders Research Group)
provides a number of significant opportunities for linking research on 
typical and non-typical
communicative development to aspects of social cognition. Members of the 
LDDRG group
are internationally recognised for their research in the following 
areas: the relationship
between parental language and children’s language development; the 
determinants of
linguistic and pragmatic development in children; research with children 
who have various
communicative disorders. There is also potential for developing research 
linking with the
Parenting and Family Research team on parenting and children’s 
psychological adjustment.
Members of the group also have close links with the Max Planck Institute 
for Evolutionary
Anthropology in Leipzig which is a world leader in research on early 
social cognition and
communicative development.
Teaching:
SPS is putting on a completely revised UG programme beginning in 
September 2012. The
new programme is being organised around themed teaching areas reflecting 
our research
strengths but also fitting the core requirements of the BPS for its 
recognition of UG
Psychology degrees. We are looking for someone with expertise in early 
social development
(but with the ability also to contribute to teaching on Evolutionary 
Psychology) to join the
team providing undergraduate teaching in the Evolution and Development 
theme.
Job Specification
Research
· Develop an active research programme leading to an international 
reputation.
· Publish research regularly in high-impact, international level journals.
· Develop and submit strong grant applications able to attract 
significant amounts of
funding.
· Supervise Ph.D. students.
· Develop collaborations within the Research Group, the School and 
throughout the
University
Teaching
· Undertaking the teaching and assessment of developmental and evolutionary
psychology at undergraduate level on the Psychology BSc degree.
· Teaching and assessment of students on any appropriate taught Masters 
program.
· Providing pastoral care to students via the academic advisory system.
· Supervising undergraduate and Masters level projects.
· Cooperating with colleagues in the review and development of the 
curriculum.
· Contributing to the quality and governance of the undergraduate and 
any appropriate
Masters program.
Administration
Administrative responsibilities as allocated by the Head of Division and 
Head of School,
taking into account the individual’s workload in other areas and the 
need to gain this type of
experience for the purposes of promotion. Typical duties are likely to 
include:
· Dealing with administration in relation to the running of the 
University and School
including aspects of postgraduate or undergraduate education.
· Liaison with the relevant Programme Director to ensure quality and 
consistency of
curriculum development and delivery.
· Attendance at Division and School meetings and participation in other 
committees
and working groups within the School, the Faculty and the University to 
which
appointed or elected.
· Undertaking such other duties as may be required.
Person Specification
Essential knowledge, skills and experience
· A PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline
· Clear evidence of an emerging track record of high quality research in 
developmental
psychology.
· An emerging track record of peer-reviewed, high impact publications.
· The potential to attract external funding, particularly in the form of 
Research Council
grants
· Experience teaching on an undergraduate Psychology programme
· Excellent communication and organisational skills.
· The ability to show initiative and to work independently as well as 
part of a team.
· The ability to lecture and to supervise students, to a high level.
· Attention to detail

· Experience of supervising student projects
· Experience of collaborative research
