Hi everyone

Thanks so much for all of the very helpful suggestions. There is far more material than I will be able to do justice to in my review (a 2,000 word encyclopaedia entry), but I'm pasting the full list of suggested references below. As Brian and others have suggested, a detailed historical review of theories dating back to the pre-Chomksyan era would certainly be an interesting project for someone.
