Workshop at the Linguistic Institute 2013: Universality and Variability

This workshop examines the role of variability in how sound systems are
acquired or changed. The program includes spoken and poster presentations
examining this topic from a number of different phonetic, phonological, and
psycholinguistic perspectives, including child language acquisition,
non-native production and perception, sound change, phonotactic learning,
and sociophonetic variation.

The workshop will be held at the Institute from 9am-5pm on Friday, June 28.

Spoken presentations include:

   - Lisa Davidson (New York University): Variability attenuates
   sensitivity to acoustic detail in cross-language speech production
   - Matt Goldrick (Northwestern University): Abstraction and phonetic
   detail in the acquisition of gradient phonotactics
   - Bob McMurray (University of Iowa): Variability and the emergence of
   abstraction from simple learning principles: Evidence from early word
   learning and reading
   - Katherine White (University of Waterloo): Coping with phonetic
   variation in early word recognition
   - Alan Yu (University of Chicago): Cross-individual variation in speech
   perception and production
