Using cartoons for experimenters

Dear Infochilders,

Does anybody know if it is totally legal to use 2 minute extracts of cartoons such as "The egg and Jerry" (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera 1956) for experiments or language assessments with children (production of narratives for example)? If not, how can we obtain permission for non commercial use? Has anybody gone through the procedure? It is of course easy to download from the net, which does not mean it's legal....

Best,
Aliyah
