professional video transcription?

Dear everyone,

We are planning to obtain language samples from parent-child dyads over a
period of 5 years. Over this period, we will accumulate almost 14,000 hours
of video, and we are looking to find the most cost-effective way to have
them transcribed.

We are considering a professional transcription service (in the US:
www.verbalink.com), since they are quite a lot cheaper than the cost of
hiring, training and supervising transcribers. However, we have a few
concerns, and were wondering if anybody has experiences to share.

Our study will follow children from 1;1 to 4;6 and we're concerned about
transcription by people who are not in some way trained in language
development, especially at the younger ages. But maybe this concern is
unwarranted and a verbatim transcription (of literally every sound that the
parent or the child produces) will give us what we need?

Similarly, our study population are to a large extent speakers of AAVE, and
we're somewhat wary as to whether a non-academic transcription service can
be trusted to transcribe AAVE felicitously.

We're also wondering whether it is relatively easy to convert verbatim
transcripts into the CHAT format or whether it would be advisable to
transcribe using CHAT in the first place.

If anyone has experience with or advice on these issues we would be most
grateful for your input!
Best,
Eileen Graf
